A Much Younger Man by Veronica Wilde
I am not much for the younger man/older woman plot but I thought this had potential to be great. Or maybe I am just a little bit twisted. I think I would have really enjoyed the story if the characters had stopped acting so stupid.
Kristen had a no good very bad marriage to one of those men who are too handsome for their own good. A year ago he left her for Victoria one of those high-society blonde’s who are too perfect for their own good. So hey, it was a match made in heaven only Kristen finds herself celebrating her son’s birthday with the plastic people.
Kristen is a pretty hot babe herself and she poshes up really well. At the party, which Victoria created for herself and her friends and not at all close to what you would do for an eight year old kiddo, a man catches Kristen’s eye. Man with a capital M and of course the yummy dish turns out to be younger than she thought and Victoria’s 22 year old son.
I found myself really enjoying this ebook by a new to me author and was very happy I made this purchase. And then it all went downhill and fast. With in minutes of meeting each other Dylan and Kristen are making out hot and heavy. In Dylan’s room, in his mothers home, with the door open and after a quick game of hide from mommy in the closet, they are just about naked and sexing it up on the bed. I may have been able to look this over because I was really enjoying the story and really liked Kristen. And maybe it is just me but this was her child’s birthday party, I couldn’t get around. Period.
But I had planned on reviewing this and kept on keeping on and hoped for the best. The next night was Kristen’s night, her son was spending the summer with daddy per the divorce. Dylan ends up playing delivery boy because medicine was left out of the overnight bag. Kristen thanks him and sends him on his way, only to later end up on the kitchen floor again with the door open and the son in the house. All I could think of while they were playing a game of 69 was your kid could walk in any moment.
Really after that I had a hard time buying the concerned teacher worried about her reputation, especially one who lets anyone take nude photos of her on a cell phone. I had a hard time with a lot of things. Kristen was a pretty well done character, balancing self esteem issues without sounding stupid and needy. And most of all, she did own her stupidity and didn’t try to throw it off on Dylan, her ex or the world at large. Dylan was a 22 year old man. I think the author nailed him to a tee. The tear them apart moment made no sense and was a big duh moment on Kristen’s part. But I did enjoy the end scene and the fact that they faced it together.
I think I would have rated this in an A range if it hadn’t of been for the lack of regard for her child. What annoyed me the most was that was completely at odds with how the character behaved in every other aspect. I will be very interested in seeing what Veronica Wilde does next. I would love to hear what others think if you have had a chance to read this or if you plan to buy it. I think it will work for others but it didn’t for me.
Grade D

Sybil, the whole phone thing squicked me out so much that I was gonna blog about it. Then I remembered all the requested reviews I owed to people, and the guilt set in. Sheesh.
Did you think that it could have been a good story? I mean I really liked the characters for the most part.
And Dylan was such a guy. A 22 year old guy. I didn’t date 22 year old boys when I WAS 22. When he pulled out that phone she should have slapped him because she should have known better.
I get the wanna have a hot fling. I get the omg I am not that OLD! But geeze you are a teacher! With a kiddo who has most likely already gone though hell because of his dad.
I think I had a harder time with the kitchen floor thing – WHILE the kid is in the house than the photos.
I just read this. I didn’t realize you had a review posted, Sybil. I gave it the same grade – D. I was skeeved out by it and not because of the age thing. It was just a bit skeevy.
hee… you gonna review it? I am all for multi reviews *g* but I am guessing we were skeeved out by the same things.
Could have been so much better. 🙁
