Sybil’s review of Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1) by J.R. Ward
Paranormal romance released by Signet Sep 2005
The first time I picked up this book, I put it down after reading the back. It was one more vampire book, one more series, one more niftily-named secret group…and the hero’s name was Wrath. The book didn’t sound bad, but with other books featuring similar elements gathering dust on my shelf, I didn’t know if I’d find time to read it.
Last week while waiting for an oil change, I found the book in my hand again. I decided to read a few pages – the next thing I knew, I was on page 60, they were calling me over the intercom to tell me my car was ready, and I was seriously thinking of sitting in the parking lot and reading more.
Darius, a member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood (warrior vampires created to protect “regular” vampires from the Lessening Society), is on a mission. He wants Wrath, the king of the vamps who doesn’t want to be king, to help his half-human daughter with her transition. Wrath is the only purebred vampire left and since many humans don’t survive the transition, it is Darius’s hope Wrath’s blood will help her survive. Trouble is Wrath has little use for humans, unless it involves sex or killing them. The answer isn’t no, it’s hell no.
OMG I loved this book!!! Rest of my review can be found here.
Read the review, check out the website and buy the book. You can thank me later ;).
Bought it, but haven’t been in the mood to pick it up yet.
I have it on order at Amazon…ordered it on PBW’s recommendation. And now I am so thrilled I did! Of course, I have to wait until November, because of another book I have on order. But that’s okay. Great review, too.
I went ahead and ordered it after reading the review and the excerpt on her website. Dunno when I’ll have time to read it, but…ah, what the hell, what’s another series to add to my list of auto-buys? 😀
dammit you beat me to it! I read this book last night and have been prepared to gush about it on my blog but I’ve been gone all day. I loved it!
However, I get to do a contest to give away an autographed copy on my blog so I don’t feel so bad 😉
Hey Sybil, your review made Dark Lover seem so intriguing that I bought it today! I saw some comments on the RT message board last week and I was still undecided on buying Dark Lover. The characters names and the rap/hip hop music made me hesistant to buy Dark Lover at first but I’m willing to give it a try.
I just started it yesterday. I like it a lot so far. The only thing I’m not really into is the names of the vampires. It’s a little too Sherrilyn Kenyon for me. However, I think this series is what the Kenyon series should have been (JMPO) The writing isn’t so goofy (Kenyon tries to be too funny at really not funny moments), but there are a lot of serious kick ass moments (which I think Kenyon does very well). And, what is suprising me, is that the writing and plot devices are really good…at least as far as I have read. I’m splitting my time reading this book and watching the first season of Lost…..I have to say this….Sawyer is so hot.
Nicole: pick it up 😉
Megan: YAY! can’t wait to hear what you guys have to say.
meljean: that is so why I wasn’t going to get it… that and the names. All I needed was one more paranormal series to be buying and not reading. But really wow.
Angie: if you get your hands on the next one I so want it
erika: I will be checking out your blog to see what you think!
misty: honestly it is way different than SK, at least I think so. The names grow on you ;).
I picked it up at B&N on Sunday morning and blogged about it yesterday–great book. I originally passed on it because of the names, but you’re right they do grow on you.
