Historical romance published by Avon on 29 Jul 08

I’m never one to limit myself to or from certain genres or subgenres (contrary to certain opinion), but I will say that I was initially curious, and somewhat iffy about this book. I really enjoy Teresa Medeiros’s writing, but Highlander romances aren’t my favorite. However, as a curious person, I couldn’t let it go, and got my hands on a copy of the book. Even though the excerpt didn’t grip me, I went for it anyway. Long story short, I’m so very glad I did.

Catriona Kincaid is a plucky heroine. There’s really no other way to describe her. A complete romantic, smart, strong, but not always sensible, you can’t help but like her. She’s the typical abused poor relation, but Catriona doesn’t make herself out to be a victim. (And thank goodness, because how unbearable would that be.) When circumstances begin to spiral out of control, Catriona wrests command of her life back, traveling to Newgate and proposing marriage to a man who she believes is a hero, and is to be executed. She’s a master strategist. Hang, or marry me and get a fortune. What a choice – and obviously she gets her way. Although she’s emotional, ultimately Catriona’s a practical young lady with a firm grip on reality.

Simon Wescott is a rogue, and rather self-deprecating. In a way, he keeps opinions and expectations of himself low, in order to not disappoint others. Much like many other romance novel heroes, he had a difficult life. In keeping with historical romances, he’s the second son, relegated to abuse by his brother, and father. Unfortunately, his brother passed away, and his relationship with his father never improved. Simon was also abandoned by his mother, which resulted in his unwillingness to form connections and fight for a “higher cause.” I enjoyed following Simon’s journey from an unfeeling flake, to someone worth having, and gallant.

The characters truly make the story in Some Like It Wicked. They’re incredibly well written, human, and enjoyable. Catriona and Simon are not only people you’d want to be friends with, you support them one hundred percent. There were only a few minor instances where I felt incidents or events were suspect or skeptical. Accordingly, they hardly caused a blip on my radar, and I was easily able to get over it. (One being Catriona’s evil cousin, who treats her abominably, and is shallow, shrill and all things “bad step-sister” like.)

The next book in this set is Some Like It Wild, which tells the story of Conner Kincaid (Catriona’s brother). I’m excited to read it, though curious and somewhat hesitant. Conner is mentioned throughout Some Like It Wicked but never makes an appearance. I do hope, however that Some Like It Wild begins after his life has “settled down” – or at the onset of his new life. While I’m sure Ms. Medeiros will do an excellent job writing his story, I’m more interested in a focus on Conner, rather than a sequel where he has to split the spotlight Catriona and Simon. Of course, that’s simply my personal, and current thought.

Some Like It Wicked offers s a wide range of emotion, and a well written story, and it doesn’t get too dark or maudlin. The plot and characters are real and believable. I appreciated that there was no unnecessary angst or unnecessary serial killer thrown in to “keep things interesting.” This a great romance read, overall lighthearted and eminently satisfying. I can’t wait to read Some Like It Wild. I definitely recommend this book to any reader who enjoys Ms. Medeiros’s books, as well as historical romances.

Grade: B+

Some like it dangerous…
When Highland beauty Catriona Kincaid storms Newgate Prison to seek the help of disgraced nobleman and notorious rogue Simon Wescott, she is prepared to offer him both wealth and freedom. She never dreams the wicked rake will be bold enough to demand a far more sensual prize.

Some like it seductive…
Simon is shocked to discover the tomboy he met long ago has blossomed into a headstrong temptress. Although he’s sworn off being a hero, he can’t resist striking a devil’s bargain that may very well end up costing him his heart.

Some like it wicked…
Catriona comes looking for a hero. What she finds is a man…

Read an excerpt here.
