REVIEW: Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain
August 26, 2008
Wendy the Super Librarian's review of Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain
Suspense/thriller fiction hardcover released by St. Martins Minotaur 2 Sep 08
As much as I love a good romance novel, I started out my reading life as a mystery reader. While both are genre fiction, I expect different things from each of them. In romance, I want the author to make me care about the characters. I want to become emotionally invested in their lives and struggles, which makes the happily-ever-after all that much sweeter. In mystery/suspense novels, I also want the author to make me care about the characters, but I also want what I call The White-Knuckle Factor. The kind of book that is so suspenseful, so full of thrills, that I literally cannot pry the book out of my hands. Chelsea Cain has made this her stock in trade, and this second book in her Gretchen Lowell series is a runaway freight train. Read more

Review: Unlawful Contact by Pamela Clare

Shannon C.'s review of Unlawful Contact by Pamela Clare
Contemporary romantic suspense released by Berkley 1 Apr 08
We've been featuring this book a lot lately here on TGTBTU, with our own Gwen and Alicia giving the book A grades. Then, of course, Ms Clare has stopped by to give us all her real life prison experience. But I hesitated for a long time before deciding to read this book, because Romantic Suspense is one of those genres that I am really iffy about. It can either be really really good, with compelling characters who are caught in hopeless situations where you wonder how in the world they can possibly find a HEA, or it can be really really horrible, with dumb shrieky heroines paired with blandly tough cop types who always do stupid things like go back to their houses alone while a killer lies in wait.

Connie's review of Trapped by Chris Jordan
Suspense Thriller from MIRA 1 Nov 07
Jane Hartley's 16 year old daughter fought and beat leukemia when she was a young child. And since she beat it, Kelly has been fighting her mother's desire for her to 'take it easy'. This all comes about in the first chapter as Jane is 'tsk, tsk'ing a young, tattooed woman, who is too stupid to have on a helmet, while holding onto her boyfriend (with one hand!) as he recklessly drives his motorcycle on the freeway.

Review: First You Run (The Bullet Catchers, Book 4) by Roxanne St. Claire

Connie's review of First You Run (The Bullet Catchers, Book 4) by Roxanne St. Claire
Romantic Suspense by Pocket Star 25 Mar 08
There are three other books already released in St. Claire's Bullet Catchers series: Kill Me Twice (Book 1), Thrill Me to Death (Book 2), and Take me Tonight (Book 3). First you Run is the first novel I have read by Roxanne St. Claire. I am happy to say the novel stands alone and I hope to get a chance to read more by her.
Bullet Catcher Adrien Fletcher asks a favor of Lucy Sharpe, the operative in charge of the group, in order to get the go-ahead to find a 'shelia' for a friend. This isn't just any woman but one who was an illegally adopted baby.

Review: Strong and Sexy by Jill Shalvis

Sybil's review of Strong and Sexy (Sky High Air, Book 2) by Jill Shalvis
Romantic Suspense released from Brava 1 Jan 08
I have a really hard time with funny books, make it slap stick comedy and I am generally running for the hills. So it is odd that I made it past the first chapter of this book because the opening is a very klutzy heroine at a fabulous party. One who of course has a perfect mother and catches the eye of the most perfect man in the room. I hurt for her, this normally makes me close a book faster than anything and toss it in a ubs bag never to be seen again. Read more

Romantic Suspense released by Onyx 4 Mar 08
This is the second novel I have read by Barbara Freethy and despite the slow, very slow start and amnesia plot I was very happy to have Silent Fall to start when I closed this book. Sarah Tucker doesn't know who she is, that she had a baby or why in the world she would have left a perfect man like Jake Sanders.

ShannonC's review of Private Maneuvers by Denise A. Agnew
Romantic erotic suspense ebook released by Samhain 1 Apr 08
Private Maneuvers is the third book in Denise A. Agnew's Hot Zone series. It follows Male Call and Unconditional Surrender although you don't need to read either of those to understand what's going on. (And I say this as the type of reader who, when reading series, absolutely has to stick to reading order.)
Unfortunately, the fact that I was able to follow this story without having read the rest of the series is among the few things that did work for me about this book.

I had only read Pamela Clare's historicals until now. I read this book because of what she posted about her experiences with prison and prisoners. Just the fact that she knew what she was writing about drew me in. Since Sybil had the ARC, I had to read it. I'm so glad I did.
