Review: Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich

Liviania's review of Fearless Fourteen (Stephanie Plum, No. 14) by Janet Evanovich
Contemporary mystery released by St. Martin's 17 Jun 08
I knew the seventeenth of June would be a good day because it was the street date of Jane Evanovich's latest Stephanie Plum mystery. Evanovich has been on my auto buy list for years and there she will remain. She possesses excellent comedic timing and an appreciation for the absurd. Despite being the fourteenth novel in the series, Fearless Fourteen is accessible to newcomers. Some paragraphs describing the importance of various characters in the beginning may bore returning readers.

Paranormal Romance released by St. Martin's 3 Jun 08
Christine Warren has become an auto-buy for me. I know when I read one of her books I will get an entertaining story anchored by a solid romance. Warren has a tight, crisp writing style, light and amusing without resorting to labored, wacky hijinks. The fifth installment in "The Others" series is another good read. Set in a US where the paranormal beings have recently revealed their existence to the humans who live alongside them, WWotWS shifts the action from New York City to Las Vegas. We are also introduced to a new group, the Red Rock Pride of Leos, or lion shifters.

Historical Romance released by St. Martin's 29 Apr 08
I have thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy. Three cousins vying for the fortune an ancestor has left for one of them if she can rise above her competitors to marry a duke. This is Sophie's story, the homliest of the cousins, the clumsiest, the one who knows she doesn't have a chance to win the inheritance, a man to love, let alone a duke. Really?

Review: Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas

Lawson's review of Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas
Historical romance released by St. Martin's 2 Oct 07
As much as I love Lisa Kleypas and her books, it's amazing that it took me six months to read this one. I've got to say though that the minute I was finished with Mine Till Midnight, I really wanted to read Seduce Me at Sunrise. Someday soon. . .Oh yeah, I've gotten off track. Mine Till Midnight is the first in the series about the Hathaway family. There are also some scenes with characters from the Wallflower books, and it's always nice to spend more time with Marcus, Lord Westcliff and Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent. Read more

Review: The Duke Next Door (Heiress Brides, Book 2) by Celeste Bradley

Sandy M's review of The Duke Next Door (Heiress Brides, Book 2) by Celeste Bradley
Historical Romance published by St. Martin's Paperbacks 1 April 08
I was quite taken with the heroine in the first book of this trilogy, Phoebe in Desperately Seeking a Duke (read the review), but I enjoyed her cousin, Deirdre even more. The heroine of this book, she's a woman who has survived the hatred and jealousy of a stepmother and long dreamed of the man who would be able to take her away from such a horrible situation and who will love her for who she is. Deirdre thought she'd lost that opportunity when Phoebe ended up betrothed to Calder in the first book, so she's not about to stand by and let the life she wants slip through her fingers once again. She knows what she wants and she successfully goes after it. Or at least she thinks so.

This book is intense. No other word readily comes to mind when thinking back over this story. From the moment we meet Ian, vowing to his tortured and comatose best friend that he will avenge Nathan's nightmare at the hands of two of the world's most notorious and bloodthirsty drug lords, we are caught up in the intensity of his life. His need for revenge. His need to rid the world of these monsters. His lust for the one woman who can distract him from his mission, and his need of and love for that woman to keep him sane and assure him of a future.

Ms Bradley is another author whose books I have on the to-be-read shelf, amid all my other thousands of books, and I have never gotten as far as cracking one open until now. I plan to remedy that very soon. I thorougly enjoyed this book. I was intrigued and delighted with the heroine from Chapter 1 and she never once let me down.

Kleypas' second contemporary romance picks up where the first one left off. It's still in first person, it's set in Houston, and it's got a great Texas good ol' boy. I've got to say too, the cover is fabulous. That blue sky, the red earth (though just so everyone knows the picture looks more like West Texas than Houston, and yes, that is a 700 mile difference between the two places), and those low slung jeans on a swaggering male. It just makes the heart go pitter patter. . . Read more
