Paranormal romance released by Forever 3 Mar 09

It says something about the compellingness (is that even a word?) of an author’s series when it doesn’t take me six months between reading books. I didn’t wait long at all between reading Pleasure Unbound and starting in on Desire Unchained. And I have to say that this is an awesome paranormal series, and if Larissa Ione keeps it up, she will land on my very short list of auto-buy authors.

Yet again, we are treated to the three brothers who run Underworld General Hospital. This time, the focus is on Shade. When he is captured and chained, he is startled to find his ex-lover, Runa, sharing a cell. Turns out they’ve been nabbed by the ghouls who keep stealing organs from supernatural creatures, and Runa, far from being the clingy, needy woman Shade remembers, is strong, has new abilities, and isn’t so happy with Shade for breaking her heart.

Yet again, I was drawn into the world Ms. Ione has created. Ms. Ione’s style is reminiscent of J.R. Ward, only tighter. I believe the world she’s created and I like the fact that, yet again, we are given an anti-hero in the form of Shade, who isn’t always the nicest guy. Runa is a good match for him, and while she’s not nearly as strong a character as Shade, I was afraid she’d be a clingy weakling and was grateful she wasn’t.

The plot is tight, and resolves nicely, with enough of the major arc left hanging to make readers eager for the third book in the series. The secondary romance begun in the first book is even continued and I’m really hoping it gets resolved in the third book. What’s more, the romance is strong, with the leads having great chemistry and hot scenes together.

I do have a quibble though, which rather significantly detracts from the grade. I wish Ms. Ione hadn’t come so close to pushing the envelope only to back down at the last minute. Case in point: Shade has a dungeon. He has a need to be dominant, but he doesn’t like this fact about himself. He hates that Runa eventually wants him to engage in BDSM play with her, and he ends up feeling like he can’t do that with someone as pure as Runa. Blech. If a book is going to have BDSM themes, then it by god should have BDSM themes. It shouldn’t pussyfoot around them in an attempt to be edgy. Because the fact that Shade thought being a dom was something horrible made me lose lots of respect for him.

Overall, I liked this addition to the series. Ms. Ione is a talented writer, and I enjoy visiting the paranormal world she’s created. I just hope next time she’ll either push the envelope all the way or leave it alone.

  Summary:
.
Pleasure is their ultimate weapon . . .
.
Runa Wagner never meant to fall in love with the sexy stranger who seemed to know her every deepest desire. But she couldn’t resist the unbelievable passion that burned between them, a passion that died when she discovered his betrayal and found herself forever changed. Now, determined to make Shade pay for the transformation that haunts her, Runa searches for him, only to be taken prisoner by his darkest enemy.
.
A Seminus Demon with a love-curse that threatens him with eternal torment, Shade hoped he’d seen the last of Runa and her irresistible charm. But when he wakes up in a dank dungeon chained next to an enraged and mysteriously powerful Runa, he realizes that her effect on him is more dangerous than ever.
.
As their captor casts a spell that bonds them as lifemates, Shade and Runa must fight for their lives and their hearts-or succumb to a madman’s evil plans.
Contemporary romance released by Berkley 3 Mar 09

Originally, I hadn’t been particularly interested in reading this book. The phrase “feminist heroine” usually fills me with an unnameable dread. But after reading Jessica’s take on the gender politics and feminism in the book I decided I should read it myself since her review was very positive and I figured that if she liked the book, the chances of me hating it would go down. And I did enjoy this book. I haven’t quite embraced Julie James as the best thing to happen to the romance community since Nora Roberts, but I would definitely read her again.

This is a workplace romance between J.D. Jameson, a conservative, golf-playing member of his country club, and Payton Kendal, a vegetarian liberal feminist. Both are lawyers, and both have been in competition since they started working at their new firm. Both are hoping to make partner, and when their boss throws them together to help win an important client, they are forced to work together. At least until the decision comes down from on high that only one of them will, in fact, make partner.

I really liked both of these characters. Both Payton and JD seemed like real people you could actually meet and have a conversation with, and I thought that the ways in which they reacted to the world were realistically portrayed. I’m a sucker for witty banter, especially when it comes out of realistic characters, so I really enjoyed their interactions, and I enjoyed the build-up of their romance. I didn’t particularly even mind that Ms. James closed the bedroom door on the sex scenes. I also loved the way that both of them related to their friends.

The conflict played itself out in a way I liked. Though the book does feature its share of wacky hijinks, particularly when JD and Payton start playing pranks on each other, they were generally not distracting from the overall focus of the story. Even the obligatory dark moment, when Payton finds out about something JD did in the beginning of their relationship, worked for me.

What I didn’t particularly like–and this is kind of a minor nitpick but it irritated the crap out of me regardless–was that I felt that JD’s parents and Payton’s came out of Blatant Stereotype Central Casting. Payton’s mom is particularly obnoxious, and, sadly, she appears with alarming frequency in the story. Each time she showed up with her strident hippie-ness, I wanted to punch her in the face and/or stick some bacon in her mouth to shut her up.

If you haven’t yet read this book, you definitely should give it a try. It’s a great workplace comedy with some truly likeable leads. I definitely plan to check out Just the Sexiest Man Alive, Ms. James’ debut novel, and I’m hoping it’s just as good.

Grade: B

  Summary:
.
WHEN IT COMES TO THE LAWS OF ATTRACTION . . .
.
Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are lawyers who know the meaning of objection. A feminist to the bone, Payton has fought hard to succeed in a profession dominated by men. Born wealthy, privileged, and cocky, J.D. has fought hard to ignore her. Face to face, they’re perfectly civil. They have to be. For eight years they’ve kept a safe distance and tolerated each other as co-workers for one reason only: to make partner at the firm.
.
. . . THERE ARE NO RULES.
.
But all bets are off when they’re asked to join forces on a major case. At first apprehensive, they begin to appreciate each other’s dedication to the law—and the sparks between them quickly turn into attraction. But the increasingly hot connection doesn’t last long when they discover that only one of them will be named partner. Now it’s an all out war. And the battle between the sexes is bound to make these lawyers hot under the collar,
Paranormal romance released by Forever 20 June 08

Originally, I had been planning to review the first three novels in the Demonica series as a Duckies do Series post because RL, she keeps me busy. But recent discussions of the books on Twitter, and the fact that Fictionwise recently sold the book for $0.82 made me rethink that decision. If you didn’t take advantage of the offer of this book via Fictionwise, you are missing out on one of the most un-put-downable romances that’s come out recently!

The Demonica series centers around Underworld General, a hospital run by three sexy demon brothers, Eidolon, Shade and Wraith. When Tayla, a human hunter, is brought to the hospital after sustaining serious injuries, the rest of the staff would rather kill her, because she belongs to the Aegis, a group of trained warriors that regularly kills demons whether they deserve it or not. But Eidolon intervenes and treats Tayla anyway, and the two of them find themselves unable to fight a fierce attraction.

I was actually quite surprised by just how much I loved this book. A number of aspects of the story felt really cheesy. The names come to mind, for one thing. While not as bad as Zsadist or Rhage, I did find Wraith and Shade to be two of the cheesiest names I’ve encountered in romancelandia. I also felt some of the world-building was a bit clunky, with names of creatures dropped in as if for no other apparent reason than that the author wanted to use all the stuff she’d worked out whether it was necessary or not. And then, well, there’s the whole “Either I need to find a mate or I’m going to become a crazy fucking machine!” which, as far as conflicts go, made me snort.

But such is Ms. Ione’s storytelling ability that these things didn’t actually bother me when I was reading the book. Her writing is vivid and detailed, and her characters are extremely well-done. I loved meeting them, and it was incredibly fun watching Eidolon and Tayla fight their attraction.

I also really appreciated that in this world there is good and bad in everyone, from the demons to the Aegis. I could see what drew Tayla about the Aegis, but I could also see why they were feared. I really appreciated the shades of gray, because that’s how life is, and I’ve gotten impatient with light and fluffy paranormals of late.

The action was intense, and the book was hard to put down. I kept fearing for all my favorite secondary characters, certain that Ms. Ione would kill them off, and as I said, I found Tayla and Eidolon’s romance compelling. I tore through this book, and even a few weeks later, scenes stick out in my mind.

I highly recommend this book. If you can put up with a bit of cheesiness, it’s well worth your time.

Urban fantasy released by Ace 31 Jan 06

I know what you’re thinking. You are no doubt thinking to yourself, ‘What took you so long to start the Mercy Thompson books, Shannon?’ And you would be right. They have only been recommended to me on numerous occasions by lots of people, most notably Gwen, who, upon my random squeeing about this book over at Duckie Central, laughed and pointed me to her reviews of the rest of the series and implied that I might not have been paying sufficient attention to her great taste in books. Well, if they’re all this good, I will never doubt Gwen again.

What works really well for me is Mercy herself. In a word, I love her. You know how in some books they tell you over and over that the heroine has a big heart? Yeah, well, we see that firsthand. Mercy is loyal to her friends, and is willing to do whatever she needs to in order to help them. And it’s that big-heartedness that made me a Mercy fangirl. She also seems fairly smart, and doesn’t just wade in with her size nines the way some urban fantasy heroines seem to. I even bought the love triangle, because I really did believe that Mercy cared about the two men she’s going to have to choose between, and there was no silly, “Oh, now why would you be interested in li’l ol’ me?” antics on her part.

I also felt the world-building was superb. I liked that the implications of how supernatural creatures would be treated if they came out of the closet were explored in greater detail. And the werewolf and vampire politics and maneuvering were fascinating.

This book wasn’t quite a keeper for me — I put it down fairly easily a time or two — but I did stay up way too late trying to finish it, and now I have the rest of the series to look forward to reading. Thankfully, there are only two other Mercy-centered books, so it’s possible I will actually manage to catch up before a new Mercy book comes out.

  Summary:

Mercy Thompson’s life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn’t exactly normal herself.

Contemporary romance ebook released by Ellora’s Cave 17 May 08

Ms. Kinson specifically requested that we review one of her books, and unfortunately, she got stuck with me. My track record for Ellora’s Cave books has been something less than inspiring, unless you’re Samantha Kane, which most authors are not. In fact, in my more megalomaniacal moments, I like to think that Ms. Kinson keeps coming back to the site every day, with bated breath, hoping I do not hate her book. Well, for her, at least, the wait is over. Read on for my thoughts.

Megan Frost is the assistant manager of a very successful restaurant in Toronto. When her boss insists she needs a holiday, she is glad to be going to sunny Bermuda so she can enjoy the sights, work on her tan, and maybe have some vacation sex. She is not expecting Gabriel Law, the Dark Angel of rock, to also be spending the week in Bermuda and, thanks to a misunderstanding, they soon find themselves sharing a house, and their beds. But can an average girl and a rock god find lasting happiness?

Well, I’ll just go right ahead and say it. I liked this short novel. Both Megan and Gabriel were nice, normal people who had perfectly understandable neuroses. There was no tortured past for either of them, and they both had chemistry in spades. Plus, I am a sucker for musician heroes, even though Gabriel’s style of music probably isn’t my cuppa, either. The sexual tension between the two is palpable practically from the moment they meet, and when they finally get into bed, the sex scenes are toe-curlingly good.

I really liked Ms. Kinson’s writing style. She is funny without having her heroine do silly things just for cheap laughs. Her descriptions of Bermuda made me wish I were going there, and I really empathized with the characters, and could hear their very distinct voices in my head. Plus, this isn’t a terribly complex story, with no extraneous suspense subplot, and only incidental mentions of other characters, so we really do get to see the development of the relationship between Gabriel and Megan.

I have a few quibbles that keep this out of the A grade range. First of all, there was a paranormal element inserted in the story that not only felt unnecessary, but was also way too schmaltzy for my taste. Second of all, no mention was ever made of Gabriel and Megan using any form of protection. If I were Megan, even if I were sleeping with a rock star, I would be worried at the very least about disease.

All in all though, I really enjoyed this story and am pleased to find an EC title that I can recommend.
Grade: B

  Summary:

Megan Frost, an up-and-coming restaurateur, knows everything there is to know about the culinary arts, but when it comes to pop culture, she’s been living under a rock. During a vacation to the sunny island of Bermuda, the yummiest dish she’s ever laid eyes on rolls that rock right off her.

British musician Gabriel Law, the famous Dark Angel of Rock, regrets putting his songwriting on the back burner. Tired and creatively simmered out, he retreats to the peace and solitude of Bermuda in order to cook up some original sounds for his new album. But when he finds a naked girl in his holiday cottage, he happily exchanges solitude for a sizzling duet.

The ingredients for a sexy, scorching relationship are in place, but the mix isn’t complete without a romantic legend, a mysterious taxi driver and a surprise symbol of destiny from the aquamarine sea…

Science fiction romance published by Samhain Publishing 6 Jun 07

I love being able to discover a new-to-me author. It’s one of the greatest perks to reviewing, but more often than not, my new author discoveries aren’t really all I wish they were.

Then again, sometimes I get a book like Katriena Knights’ Earthchild which manages to do pretty much everything right and leave me with a smile on my face and hope for one of my favorite romance subgenres.

The story here centers around Noisy Girl, a human who was raised among the indiginous White Fur people on the planet Denahault. She is so named because the White Fur people don’t actually vocalize and rely on sign language. Anyway, Noisy Girl goes to the human portion of the planet because she wants to learn more about where she came from. She meets Jeff Anderson, who is on Denahault for the wedding of his former commanding officer, and the two of them immediately strike up a friendship. But when the friendship turns to love, they have to make an important choice–pursue their dreams or find some way to be together.

Noisy Girl is a great heroine. She is sweet and full of bubbly enthusiasm. In many ways, she is quite innocent, but this never really comes across as particularly infantile, so I wasn’t creeped out by the time she and Jeff start having sex. In fact, her people are pretty wise in the ways of sex, which was a nice change from my preconceived notions. I also really like that Noisy Girl didn’t immediately embrace everything about human society, and figuring out her place is, at times, a heartbreaking struggle for her.

I liked Jeff, too. He’s a nice, beta hero with dreams about captaining his own starship. He doesn’t even really understand why he’s so drawn to Noisy Girl, but he is and he wants to help her accustom herself to being human. I loved watching him realize that, in the end, there was no way he could live without her, and I loved the solution they found to their conflict.

I love the growing friendship then love dynamic of this book. There were no huge misunderstandings, both of these characters seemed very level-headed, and yet they have to grow up and come to terms with what they each want in life before they get their HEA.

The secondary characters are great and well-developed. I also found that it wasn’t necessary to have read the previous book in the series, Starchild, because the world building works just fine on its own. That said, I have already bought my copy of Starchild and intend to put it up high on Mt. TBR. I think fans of science fiction romance will really enjoy this book. I know I certainly can’t wait to see what else Katriena Knights has in store for me.

Grade: A-

  Summary:

Could he give up the stars…for her?

Taken in as an infant and raised by the primitive, non-human natives of the colony planet Denahault, Noisy Girl has always known she was different. Human settlers initiating peaceful contact confirm it—her true home is a planet called Earth, millions of miles away among the stars.

Her search for her heritage leads her to the home of Harrison Fairfax and Trieka Cavendish, and their guest Jeff Anderson, Trieka’s former second-in-command.

For Jeff, Trieka’s offer to captain the legendary ship Starchild is a lifelong dream fulfilled. Then he meets Noisy Girl, an entrancing young woman who speaks only in sign language. She captures his imagination like no other woman ever has, and his efforts to teach her English deepens a relationship he never thought was possible for him.

But the claustrophobic, technology-laden atmosphere of Earth traumatizes the gentle Noisy Girl, and suddenly Jeff’s choices aren’t quite so clear.

If he accepts permanent command of Starchild, all hope of happiness with this beguiling woman will be destroyed. Unless a compromise can be found…

Warning, this title contains the following: Sensual content, environmental pollution, emotional mothers and extensive use of alien sign language.

Contemporary paranormal/urban fantasy romance released by Juno 1 Apr 08

I asked Stacia Kane for an ARC of her upcoming release, Personal Demons, because I read her blog and I’ve liked one of the books she wrote as December Quinn quite a lot. I didn’t really know what I was getting into, so I didn’t have much time to develop any preconceived notions about what the story would be about.

The first thing I should point out about this book is that it’s dark. It’s even scary in places, and she doesn’t skimp on the gory details. This is, after all, a story about demons, and these demons are not always the nicest people in the world. This worked really well for me, because I like horror and ghosts and ghouls and things that bump in the night, but I also know it’s not everyone’s cuppa.

As for the characters, mostly they worked for me. Megan is a likable enough heroine. She’s got her own issues, but she reacts the way I imagine most people would to finding out that they’ve gotten themselves mixed up in demons. Her reactions ranged from disbelief to anger and finally to acceptance. However, she didn’t gel for me as much as I’d have liked, given that this book is told in a tight third-person and all we ever get is her PoV.

I have a feeling a lot of readers are going to love Grayson Dante, the book’s hero. He’s enigmatic, kind of a smart-ass, and holy hell is he sexy! The sex scenes between Dante and Megan were very charged and steamy. Although, that being said, this book ends with a satisfying happy for now ending. It’s clear that Megan and Dante have quite a ways to go before they are officially happily ever after.

As for the rest? The blurb makes it sound like Brian, the reporter Megan has to deal with, is way more of a threat to her than he actually is. I liked Brian, actually, because he seemed like, again, a fairly normal guy who got caught up in weird stuff he wasn’t sure how to deal with.

The plot moves along briskly. The action never really comes to a stop, though there are quiet moments. It’s not all unremittingly dark, either. Megan’s demon protectors, Malifus, Malificarum and Spud provide some wonderful and much-needed comic relief. The only thing I would have liked is for a few scenes to have been expanded upon. There are a couple of moments where we look back on some event that’s just happen and talk about it, where I thought that we should have seen the events firsthand. It’s because of all that that I didn’t entirely feel like I was emotionally invested in the characters.

I definitely enjoyed this book. It’s not without its flaws, but I think for readers of urban fantasy who like lots of action and lots of chills, this book will work particularly well.

Grade: B

When psychological counselor Megan Chase promises listeners to her new radio call-in show she’ll slay their personal demons, they believe her. So do the personal demons.

Megan doesn’t know she’s the only human alive without a personal demon on her shoulder. This, coupled with her psychic abilities, makes her a valuable weapon for any demon mob-like “family” lucky enough to gain her allegiance. It also makes her a serious threat not just to the personal demons, but to a soul-sucking Legion of Hell known as The Accuser. The Accuser already has an old score to settle with Megan, and sees this as the perfect time to do it.

But Megan isn’t without allies as she’s plunged back into a world she forgot existed. A member of a competing demon family sees Megan as his ticket to power, and sets about both protecting and seducing her with devilish intensity.

Can Megan, her new demon lover, a witch with poor social skills, and three cockney guard demons named Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud defeat not only The Accuser, the personal demons, and the ghosts of Megan’s past, but the reporter who threatens to destroy Megan’s career as well?

Here’s an excerpt of Shannon’s review:

My Thoughts: I’m not terribly easy to please. (Shut up! allow me this moment, OK?). And I’ll read just about anything, although when I got into grown up books, my first love was science fiction and fantasy. I loved the idea of exploring interstellar space, of people with unusual abilities dealing with new lifeforms, and imagining what cultures we’d develop in the far future. In fact, as I’ve mentioned before, if anything, I’m still a romance newbie. So I really like it when my two loves are brought together–a good science fiction romance will make my day.

Ann Aguirre’s Grimspace is a good science fiction romance. I admit to not having read too widely in this particular subgenre yet, but I would have to say that the balance between the romance and the sci-fi elements is pretty much flawless. There are a few science fiction cliches–the resemblance to Firefly is hard to miss, but hey, I like Firefly. (Mmm… Jayne and his guns… Oops, I digress.) I have a few other guesses about Aguirre’s influences, but hey, we’ll be having an interview with her posted up next week, so we’ll see if I’m right then.

So what specifically did I like about the SF elements, since that’s what I was talking about? Well, I liked that Aguirre created several believable alien races that struck me as sufficiently other than human. I liked that she’s obviously thought a lot about how stuff works in her world, and she manages to articulate it without going into clunky technobabble. In fact, I really would love to explore this universe further, and I’m excited to find out that apparently there is a sequel planned, because there are so many possibilities that she could take the story.

As for the romance, it’s wonderful! Both Jax and March, our hero, are very broken individuals. They’re not all clean and perfect by the time the book is finished either, and there was no healing magical sexx0ring for either of them. They’ve still got some working through of stuff to do, but I get the sense that they will manage it.

I loved Jax. She’s my favorite type of…

12 Top Twelve Lists I Considered Writing but Didn’t

 1. The Top Twelve Best Heroines – I kept wanting to sneak in heroines from pesky other genres of fiction, and my top pick is a character from a fantasy series I wouldn’t recommend to most random strangers who are romance fans because, well, the books are dark. Really dark. And there’s a question about whether or not my girl even survived the book.

 2. Top Twelve Authors I’ve Never Read – I figure I haven’t been reading romance long, and I’ll either get to them eventually or I’m not likely to read them. But my TBR anxiety is bad enough as it is. Acknowledging that I have more authors to read would just depress me further.

 3. Top Twelve Things I Did to Procrastinate Instead of Study – Nobody cares and this isn’t my blog.

 4. Top Twelve Blogs I Visit Regularly – No doubt I would offend someone. We can’t have that.

 5. Top Twelve Phrases I Never Want to See in an Erotic Romance – I’m pretty sure someone has already either done that, or will in the future, and I don’t delude myself into thinking my list would be funny. Although, that being said, my first pick would be, “Fido can do an amazing trick with his tongue.”

 6. Top Twelve Favorite Books Ever – Well, given that a lot of times whatever book I’m currently reading ends up becoming my favorite book ever, I would probably leave something out.

 7. Top Twelve Blog Dramas of 2007 – I’d have to find links, and then my head might explode. And then, invariably, I’d have to clean up the mess, and like nature, I abhor a vaccuum.

 8. Top Twelve Books Sybil Liked that I Hated – Does the rest of the blogosphere really need to know that I lack good taste? No, no I don’t believe they do.

 9. Top Twelve Names I Never Want to See in a Romance Novel – The list came out to about four, after I disqualified all of J. R. Ward’s characters because they’re just generally special. Incidentally, my number one pick is Sebastian. There is a glut of Sebastians on the market.

 10. Top Twelve Plots I Would Like to See in a Romance – Again, I abandoned this after the entry where I wrote, “The paranormal protection agency consists of four people who drive around in a psychedellic van with their sentient dog and solve mysteries.” I figure that Scooby Doo and romance are two tastes that really do not taste great together, although if someone does write that plot, I sincerely hope they put me in the acknowledgements and send me an ARC.

 11. Top Twelve Characters I Would Make Out With – Well, at least Shaggy isn’t on that list.

 12. Top Twelve Gaffs I’ve Made When Discussing Romance Online – I can’t think of any that I could make amusing, and the only one that really comes to mind was when I mentioned how it would crack me up if Mavis ended up with Sommerset. I mentioned this to a friend over IM, and got a virtual pat on the head and was told, very gently, that when I’d finished reading the other 397 books in the In Death series, I could formulate crazy fanwanky theories but until then, I should maybe hold off.

What about the rest of you out there – any lists you think about but are afraid to start?  Personally, I don’t start for fear I can’t stop!
