Gwen’s review of Flirt (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, Book 18) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Fans of Hamilton’s Anita Blake novels will love this short side entry.  This is a novel-length short story in the very sexy, very violent world of Anita Blake.  If you’re following this series and are getting (have gotten) tired of the crazily complicated storyline, you’ll enjoy this story.  It has almost none of the “bigger” picture and just tells us a good yarn.

The action in Flirt is almost solely centered on Anita’s necromancer ability. There is quite a bit of overlap in the plot to her newly developed shifter abilities.  This adds quite a bit of spice and is not complicated to follow if you just roll with it.  A new character or two is introduced who may become players in a later novel.

I liked Flirt because it had a beginning, middle, and end.  It’s a short novel, or a novel-length short story that deals with loss and love.  There is some redemption in the story, though it’s a darker redemption as is appropriate for the setting.

In Flirt Anita is kidnapped by a grieving spouse and forced to use her necromancer abilities.  This all has Anita in a decided snit and has separated mentally and physically her from her “sweeties”.  However, in true Anita fashion, she gets herself out of her pickle with the help of a lion shifter that Anita has bound to herself.

I love it when Hamilton focuses on a story and the storytelling is excellent in Flirt. I sucked it down in a day.  I highly recommend this book to anyone following the series and to anyone new to it who wants to see if they’d like it.  This entry stands alone well enough and would actually serve to tell a new reader if they like the author or story.

Gwen’s review of Divine Misdemeanors (Meredith Gentry, Book 8 ) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Laurell K. Hamilton’s Merry Gentry novels typically revolve around the politics of the Unseelie Court.  A couple of the early books were more about Merry’s Men and her day job working for a private detective agency.  There are many LKH fans who, after the last few Merry books that were all about sidhe politics, were begging for a return to the private investigation roots.  With DM those beggars get their wish. 

I’m not sure what side of that fence I sit on – politics or private life.  I enjoy reading about Merry’s problems juggling all those men.  I also enjoy reading about the utterly foreign and Machiavellian sidhe courts.  With both, there is a significant sex element.  Merry has TONS of mystically enhanced sex with all sorts of creatures big and small.  It all normally combines to be a rather wild tale that is fun to read.

DM is certainly a return to Hamilton’s roots.  Merry and her men meander their way around a serial murder mystery involving the fey.  The PI agency that Merry works for is brought in for expert advice.  Things happen, sex is had, and the mystery solved.  End of book.

What I think LKH is trying to do with this entry in the series is show how Merry is growing into her role as leader of the sidhe.  In spite of her rejection of the crown(s) in the previous book and frequent verbal rejections of the title in this book, it becomes apparent that Merry still subconsciously feels she will have to be queen.  Her actions, decisions, and general behaviour in DM all point to Merry eventually accepting the crown(s).

If feels like DM is one of those “bridge” books that transitions the Merry Gentry story into the next big phase.  If I had a crystal ball, I’d say that the next book will have Merry giving birth to her twins – no doubt in some crazily mystical method – and something significant will happen on the throne(s) front.

I enjoyed this book, but felt the sex scenes were a little forced and not as hot as previous books.  And let’s be honest, we read Merry Gentry partially for the rampant sex.  Also, the “mystery” is a bit obvious.  It’s resolution is a little confused and facile.

Even with the flaws, this is a very readable book and an interesting entry in the Merry Gentry world.  I do not recommend the book if you haven’t read any of the other entries – it’s not a standalone book.  However, if you’re a fan of Merry, you should read it to see how she continues her evolution into the queen of the sidhe.

Gwen’s review of Skin Trade (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, Book 17) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Laurell K. Hamilton is one of those “love her” or “hate her” authors.  It’s seldom that someone sits on a fence with her writing.  Her storytelling has changed enough over the last ten years or so for people’s opinions to also change – those that once loved her may now hate her and vice versa.  I’m a little more middle of the road with her – sometimes I love her and sometimes I wanna throw the book at the wall… usually more than once. PLEASE NOTE! THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS! 

This time around, contrary to recent reviews, I found myself loving her.  Skin Trade is a very fun story to read.  Sure there are things I’d have different or story elements that skeeved me out (the series is part horror novel), but there’s no doubt that Skin Trade is a very good book.  At least, for those of us on that side of that love/hate coin.

AGAIN! PLEASE NOTE! THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!

Skin Trade opens with Anita contemplating the head of a fellow marshal/vampire executioner sent to her as a gift from a sociopathic vampire in Las Vegas.  Anita also spends a good amount of time in Skin Trade contemplating her life – she’s sick of killing, sick of having to feed the ardeur to no seeming purpose, sick of her life in general.  She’s sick of being feared by beings she respects (vampires) and sick of being pursued by beings she attracts (tigers).  She’s sick of it all and you get the impression she’s a whisper away from saying “fuck it all” and just walking away from everything.

Haven’t we all been there?  Makes you wonder what’s going to happen in the next book to pull her out of her ennui and depression.  ‘Cause you know something will.

By the end of the book, many of the past books’ loose ends are resolved.  For example, I understand now why Anita attracts weretigers.  I understand more about the ardeur and why it is what it is, how it works.  I also have a better understanding of the whole Marmee Noir and Belle Morte dynamic.  I agree that the “power of the mighty orgasm” is a bit over the top, but, hey, VAMPIRES, WERES, MAGIC – we’re not exactly talking normal, human story elements here. The Mighty O (sorry Oprah) is just another one of them.

There is not a lot of sex in Skin Trade.  In fact, the first sex scene is roughly 3/4th’s of the way into the book and is almost the only explicit scene.  Anita has one other “possessed” orgy, that isn’t described explicitly, where she boffs the teenager weretiger.  Is it oogie? Yes. Is it important to the storyline?  Who knows yet.  I have a feeling that the next book in the series will explain this.  I probably could have preferred Hamilton made him a little bit older, but perhaps the age of this character will come into play later – we have to trust Hamilton to make it make sense.  The rest of the minimal sex in the book is in the climactic (heh) scene and is creepy, but fits the story.

The story elements that I had less patience for are the endless speculating and criticism of Anita’s personal life by her fellow law enforcement officials.  It is like the only people who had any understanding of her and her life were the non-human characters.  And that may actually be Hamilton’s point – Anita is no longer human enough to fit in with her fellows. But I did get heartily sick of the continual doubt and suspicion leveled at Anita.  Her professional reputation deserves better than that.  I, for one, hope she walks away from the marshal’s service and focuses on what she needs to do to get her life under control and emotionally support herself and her family.

If you’re an Anita Blake series fan, you must read this book – so many things are explained and so much is set up for a bang-up next book.  If you have never read an Anita Blake book before, you don’t want to start with this one.  While it’s very good story telling, it is a very complicated story that doesn’t lend itself to a newbie.

I started Skin Trade with high hopes.  The last Merry Gentry book, Swallowing Darkness, was high on plot and low on sex scenes that didn’t advance character development or plot.  Skin Trade also started like a redux of Obsidian Butterfly, sending Anita away from her harem to hunt monsters with Edward.  While everyone did seem unnaturally preoccupied with Anita’s love life, the first two-thirds or so were surprisingly devoid of any actual sex.  – DO NOT READ REVIEW UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED -This wasn’t a great book, but far more solid than the rest of the Anita Blake books have been lately.   And then it all went downhill. For those who want to read the book, I’m going to give away the entire ending.  Why?  Because I want to explain why I think it makes the book not worth reading.  If you want to read the book no matter what, feel free to skip this review.  If you have already read the book or want to know why I was pissed off when I was finished, feel free to continue. (you were warned about the spoilers yes?)

Let’s start with the plot problems.  Laurell K. Hamilton has been building up to a confrontation between Anita and Marmee Noir for books.  I don’t remember how many, but for several the plot has stopped dead for the Mother of All Darkness to try to take over Anita/get her to sex someone up/etc. and have everyone talk about what a badass she is.  So how does their final confrontation go?  They chat on the astral plane, unnamed assassins destroy her physical body, Marmee Noir disappears.  Anita does fuck all to get rid of her.

But now we need a bad guy!  Why not turn serial killer Vittorio into her counterpart, who has been bound by her and forgotten?  There’s nothing like an all-powerful foe no one’s ever heard of!  But how will Anita get rid of him?  What will be really badass since the confrontation with Marmee Noir didn’t happen?  What if she uses . . . the power of ORGASM?  You see, the ardeur is an important plot point, not an excuse for pr0n!  LKH is a great author.

And you know, that’s not even why I hated the book.  I could’ve dealt with that – it tied off several plot points and provided Skin Trade with a self-contained story.  Not the world’s best, but somewhat entertaining.  And a disappointing climax would be better than the absolute lack of climax (well, plot climax) some of the Anita Blake books have had.

ANITA MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY RAPES A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD.  Don’t say it wasn’t rape; the kid had no way to give informed, rational consent.  That’s rape.  And so what if Anita is skeeved out that the kid is sixteen, which shows how much better she is than the characters who aren’t?  (Although I’m not sure she even angsts about him for half a page before moving on in a series that devotes chapters to angst.) It’s the fact that LKH felt it necessary to put it in the book.  It wouldn’t have affected the book if the character hadn’t existed, much less been aged up.  And it’s doubly creepy since LKH is proven to have drawn on her own life for some of Anita’s sweeties and what happens to them.  Yes, I do find it more disturbing since Anita is a self-insert Mary-Sue rather than a well-rounded character.

But I kind of want to thank LKH for having Anita rape a sixteen year old.  I can finally give this series up.  (Let’s just hope she doesn’t do something similarly awful to the Merry Gentry books.)

I can’t quit Laurell K. Hamilton.  She writes a total piece of crap like Mistral’s Kiss and I think it’s safe to quit the Merry Gentry series.  Then she follows it up with A Lick of Frost, a one-two punch of featuring my favorite character from the series and more plot.  Fortunately, Swallowing Darkness makes me happy I haven’t been able to quit her yet.  (The lame double entendre title does cause a wince every time I think about it.) 

To be honest, I can deal with more sex in the Merry novels since the plot requires sex.  It does make sense to slow down on that some now that she is pregnant, but some fans may dislike the fact Swallowing Darkness has something like one full and two aborted sex scenes.  I don’t mind it, but feel there should be fair warning.  Why don’t I mind it?  Because the sex is replaced by movement of the plot.  And I love it when the plot moves, since LKH often seems to forget she’s telling a story.

Merry’s pregnant and should thus be declared the winner of the race to the Unseelie throne, but things are never that simple.  She has to protect her children and their fathers, which may require some extreme measures.  The violence isn’t up there with the early Anita Blake books, but there are several great battle scenes.  In between battles comes the political maneuvering.  After all, one of the fathers is already a king, and the Seelie King Taranis is claiming he’s actually the father.

There are no new characters, so if you don’t like the personalities of Merry and her men, don’t hold out hope for the hope of someone new.  (Although I can’t imagine someone making it so far in the series if not for the characters.)  I do think LKH does a good job of giving the men different personalities despite the large number present.  This one has a lot more Sholto than any since A Kiss of Shadows, which I thought was a good thing.  I rather thought that one was building him up to be more of a main character before he got shunted over by some of the others.  (Is Galen going to get his day in the limelight soon?)

Everything builds to a satisfying climax.  LKH ties off threads, completes the story she started in the novel, and finishes several of the stories she started in others.  While there are many plots left to explore in the future novels, the end of Swallowing Darkness feels like an end, rather than a convenient point to stop writing. Overall, it feels more like LKH at the top of her game rather than the dreck she’s been putting out lately.

I fell in love with LKH’s writing.  Then I fell out, but couldn’t tear free because I was attached to the characters.  Swallowing Darkness made me happy I hadn’t torn free, even moreso than A Lick of Frost, and I hope she keeps giving Merry the meaty plot she deserves.  Otherwise I may have to hate myself again for not having the willpower to stay away.  (At least my relationship with the Merry books is far less dramatic than that with the Anitas.)

Gwen’s review of Swallowing Darkness (Meredith Gentry, Book 7) by Laurell K. Hamilton

The Meredith Gentry novels resonate with me on several levels: they’re fantasy novels, they have lots of action and suspense , they’ve got some good sex (sometimes a LOT of good sex), and they’re almost always interesting stories.  That’s not t say that some aren’t stronger entries than others, but they’re all interesting on some level.  This was one of the more interesting ones, if not necessarily the best.  Read on to find out why I think so… 

To begin with, I’m writing this review to those of you already following this series and who are already familiar with the characters.  If you are not and don’t know them, this AIN’T the book (or review) for you. The Meredith “Merry” Gentry world is a twisted, convoluted one full of frenemies, factions, and subplots that would be nearly impossible to unravel if you jump in to the middle of the series.  I don’t recommend doing that and I don’t recommend this book as your first foray.  Start at the beginning and be glad you heeded my advice.

This entry in the series opens with Merry acknowledging she’s pregnant with twins and the babies have three daddies EACH.  Based on what Queen Andais has promised Merry and her guards, anyone who got Merry preggers gets to be King.  Hence the reason for all the boinking in previous books.  This means that Merry’s Queen will have six Kings.  You can imagine the consternation this causes in almost all of the Courts of Faerie, including the Light, Dark, etc.  Some Courts are more accepting than others (Sluaugh) and some are downright pathologically incapable of acknowledging that they had no say-so in the whole process.

This leads to a LOT of assassination and kidnapping attempts, causing the “deaths” of various members of Merry’s entourage and other supernatural occurrences. And very little boinking.  I KNOW!  GASP! An LKH novel with only one or two sexed up situations!

As a fan of the series, I enjoyed this entry as being one of the more “story-like” entries.  I think Merry comes into her own in this entry and starts acting more royal and less “scared little girl” than in the other books.  I think her character can see the finish line to her travails on the horizon.  By the end of the book, Merry thinks she’s living her HEA, but we know better.  There’s still at least two more Merry books on the horizon and she hasn’t had her babies yet.  I have a feeling that these babies will be forces to contend with on their own and that we’re in for a very interesting ending to this series.

I can recommend this book to any fan of the series and fan of LKH.  If you’re new to the series, and like fantasy with some edge, don’t start here but do start.  You’ll like it (some more than others).

Gwen’s review of Blood Noir (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 16) by Laurell K. Hamilton

I’ve heard people describe this book as “florid” and reviews using phrases like “growing sense of ennui”. I agree and I disagree. Read on to find out where I depart ways with other reviewers and where I think they may have a point… At the end of this post, there’s also a little bonus review of Hamilton’s 5 June 2007 release, Strange Candy – a single author anthology.

I’ve been reading Anita Blake novels for a long while. I wouldn’t say they’re an auto-buy, though I do always end up reading them and normally sooner than later. There’s a lot of things that I find compelling about Hamilton’s AB books – the paranormal elements, the kick-ass heroine who always seems to get more powerful, and interesting plot lines.

There’s a lot I don’t find so compelling about the Blake novels, too. Anita’s emotional dithering is, as always, painful to drag thru even if now she seems more at peace with herself than ever before. And can I say I hate Richard? I have always hated Richard. Sometimes he is sweet, but always he is annoying. I don’t understand Hamilton’s purpose behind leaving the Loser around and I hope she kills him off soon. I just don’t have patience for annoying men, whether in novels or real life.

In my opinion, the start of the last few AB novels have been almost lethargic and Noir is no exception. We spend the first half of the book examining Jason’s familial navel lint. For those of you who are unaware of who Jason is, he’s Jean-Claude’s pomme de sang (blood donor) and one of Anita’s good friends. Jason’s dad is dying and he talks Anita into going home with him to prove to his SOB of a dad that he’s not gay. There’s an awful lot alluded to and left totally unexplained about this part of North Carolina and Jason’s family – one of things that can really bug me about a book. I like nicely tied off loose ends, and, while the ends don’t have to end happy or even neatly, it’s nice to have just some identification of what that point meant or that it might mean something in the future.

After a sleepy first half, the book picks up considerable speed and ends with a full-out bang. I really love it when Anita’s bad side comes out. She’s so much more in control and so much more interesting. We’re still left hovering at the end of the book – not quite knowing what Belle Morte has in mind for our happy troupe, but I don’t imagine that will be left in question in the next book,

I recommend this book to any fan of the Anita Blake novels and to fans of LKH. While it could be read as a standalone, some some small amount of confusion, I don’t think it should. You need some of the background from the earlier novels to understand Marmee Noir and others.

Gwen’s review of Strange Candy by Laurell K. Hamilton
Paranormal anthology released by Berkley 5 Jun 07 (hardcover 5 Oct 06)

This is a single author anthology released last year, containing 14 little tidbits from LKH. Among them are a couple of Anita Blake stories, a cute cupid story, a grimly funny story about a super hero turned villain, various other paranormal oddities, and many others – some short, some not. It’s an interesting little book that is worth picking up from a UBS or used from Amazon.com. I enjoyed it, though was underwhelmed a couple of times.

Overall Grade: C+

I figured that if I wait until I have time to do full reviews of these six books, airborne porcine would be commonplace. So I decided to just do it – write a bunch of quick hits. These are all over the place as far as genre and release dates, so bear with me. Below are short reviews for:

This is a very good entry in the Merry Gentry world. We finally learn what Frost is and where he comes from. Plus the overall plot in this slow moving series actually moves forward in steps in this book and not in the millimeters it had before. Love the cover, too.

The Kiss by Sophia Nash
Historical romance released by Avon 26 Feb 08

This was a very nice historical. Some of the details surprised me – I haven’t seen too many authors deal with characters in quite so real a way before and it was refreshing. I did think The Big Misunderstanding was carried on about 50 pages too long, however. I just wanted to see the hero and heroine get together and see how they overcame their collective histories. Enough preamble already. Would have gotten an A from me if that had happened.

Grade: B-

The Last Warrior by Karen Kay
Historical sorta paranormal romance released by Berkley 4 Mar 08

Even I, Nathan Kamp’s #1 Fan, have to admit that this is a craptastic cover. Totally not the author’s fault, but I do with the publishers could have found a model who looked remotely like a Native American.

This was an okay book. The premise was a little unbelievable, and the author didn’t do much to suspend my disbelief. It was a decent poolside read, though. Nice romance and interesting time period (1892).

Grade: C+

Creation in Death by J.D. Robb
Futuristic thriller released by Putnam (hardcover) 6 Nov 07

I’m an Eve & Roarke fan from way back (Roarke = dark chocolate in my fantasies). I feel CiD is the least “romantic” of all the In Death books. It is definitley more a “thriller” than a “romantic suspense”. I also get less of the “futuristic” sense in this book than is evident in the other In Death entries. Nevertheless, the tension is very high throughout and I really had the feeling of “time running out” the whole time I was flipping pages faster and faster. Terrific read.

I was a little disappointed by something that Eve asked Roarke to do at the end, though – it seemed dishonorable to me and a little out of character. But it’s something I think will likely create an interesting problem for our hero and heroine in future books.

Grade: A

How to Propose to a Prince (The Royle Sisters, Book 3) by Kathryn Caskie
Historical romance released by Avon 26 Feb 08

I mostly didn’t like was irritated by this one, but it was readable. The heroine kept insisting that the hero was her soul mate (not in so many words, thankfully) and that they would be married, all because of a dream she keeps having. Perhaps I would have believed it more if the author hadn’t kept hammering it in, over and over again. The heroine comes off as a little desperate and the hero a little callous.

I REALLY hated some of the details at the end. They made me want to say “then why the f__k have you dragged your characters through all that crap!?” – but the author wiggles out of it at the very last. Barely.

Notwithstanding the teeth-grindingly irritating details, it’s another poolside read if you’re a fan of light historicals. Not awful, but not great.

Grade: C

Contemporary paranormal romance released by Dell 25 Mar 08

This was a good entry in this series. However, I don’t recommend it if this is your first foray into it. I liked how Adrian made the hero a little more “human” – well, as human as an alien vampire can be, I suppose. Good read with some interesting twists.

We here in Romancelandia are complete series addicts. Once an author writes a well received book, her fans immediately start clamoring for more stories set in the same world. I think it would be correct to state that no two Romancelandians will ever have the exact same entries on their own Favorite Series list. 

Eclectic and fodder for debate, these are the series that leap to mind when I’m asked what my favorite reads are. The order I’ve listed them in is approximate as my preferences change based on my mood and what feels right at the time.

Bev(QB)’s All Time Favorite Book Series

1. Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton. (Ballantine Books) This complex fantasy/urban fantasy showcases Hamilton’s unparalleled world building expertise. (see Review: A Lick of Frost)

2. Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. (Delacorte Press) I consider this fantasy/urban fantasy to be a master’s class in the use of first person POV. Brilliant.

3. Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. (Berkley) Hamilton is one of the godmothers of what is now referred to as urban fantasy. Unlike most long-running series, I’ve known people to jump in this one – at any point with no problems. I started at book 9, Obsidian Butterfly, then went back and read them all – several times.

4. The Cynsters, particularly the Bar Cynsters (books 1-6) by Stephanie Laurens. (Avon) The crème de la crème of Regency era historical romances. In fact, I consider book 1, Devil’s Bride, to be closer to perfection than any other romance I’ve ever read. Its only glaring flaw is that unfortunate back cover pic (roll over the original cover in the link to see it). What were they thinking?!

5. Skye O’Malley saga by Bertrice Small. (Ballantine Books) The life and loves of an extraordinary woman and her family during the reign of Elizabeth Tudor. To read a Bertrice Small book is to instantly and completely be absorbed into the rich tapestry of the tastes, sounds, sights and lives she weaves together.

6. Breeds series by Lora Leigh(Ellora’s Cave and Berkley). When someone says they are new to ebooks, I recommend they start with this series. No one writes sexual tension and characters consumed by unquenchable need better than Lora Leigh. The intense erotic scenes are woven into the story of a not-quite-human species as they overcome the horrors of their past, and begin a journey to understand themselves as a species and as individuals, while also striving to find love and acceptance.

7. The Highlanders series by Karen Marie Moning. (Jove and Dell) Although they were always a highly enjoyable auto-buy for me, it is the audio books (with Phil Gigante’s swoon-worthy narration) that earn this series a permanent place on my list. (see Aural Pleasures 103)

8. The World of Hetar by Bertrice Small. (HQN Books) In this epic fantasy, Ms Small has created a world that is in some ways recognizable, yet vastly different from our own. Without the constraint of historical fact, she allowed her muse free rein to create this lusty, sweeping saga.

9. Jarheads by Sean Michael. (Torquere and Fictionwise) Sean Michael has a unique voice. He doesn’t give us much physical description of his characters, but somehow paints an emotional picture. We get to know them through their words and actions and I get completely caught up in the lives of these lovable and loving men. Rigger, whom I adore, is the heart and soul of the series and someone I’d like to count as a good friend in real life. One caveat though – there were times when even I said, “Enough with the sex, already! Get on with the story!”

10. The Donovan series by Elizabeth Lowell. (Avon) Still tapping my foot waiting for the rest of this contemporary romantic suspense series – including a look back at the elder Donovan’s love story. You know, I do believe I’m overdue for a re-read!

11. Brothers in Arms by Samantha Kane(Ellora’s Cave). The newest addition to my list. The erotic scenes in these Regency period bisexual manage stories are written in exquisite, excruciatingly drawn out detail. And Kane manages to make each scene feel completely unique to each triad.

12. What series will someday claim this last spot on my list? Is it a series I’ve already started? Maybe Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series or Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series. A Gentleman’s Wager by Madelynne Ellis is already on my single title favorites list, but with its upcoming sequels and spin-off, will it land on my series list, too? Or maybe my next favorite series is waiting out there for me to discover it. Maybe it’s not even been written yet and is being nurtured by a muse waiting to bestow it on some worthy author.

Aural Pleasures 103 – “What” Audio Books are Recommended

In Aural Pleasures 101, we looked at the “Why” and “Where” to buy audio books. In Aural Pleasures 102, we shared advice on “How” to select audio books. So now, for the “What” to buy. Here are a few of my recommendations (audio sample links provided when available, click the cover pics to go to each book’s Amazon page):

Within the Romance genre, most narrators will be female, so I highly recommend that Aural Pleasure novices who are also historical romance fans start with The Indiscretion by Judith Ivory (click to sample Audible.com audio), narrated by Barbara Rosenblat (pictured at right). This Victorian era “lady and the cowboy” story would be a light, enjoyable read on its own, but Rosenblat elevates it by breathing life into Liddy and Sam. She narrates the book in a nondescript American accent, then gives Liddy an upper class British accent that is somehow filled with humor, vulnerability, and playfulness. And the fact that a woman is doing Sam’s voice was lost to me in seconds because his mumbly Texas drawl IS Sam. I think I smiled through most of this audio book. What a JOY this was to listen to! But to illustrate the points I made in Aural Pleasures 102, Rosenblat is also the narrator for Katie MacAlister’s Light My Fire (Aisling Grey series). Even though I ADORED her in The Indiscretion, I listened to the sample and I just don’t think her voice “fits” the MacAlister series as well (could I request that all you rabid Rosenblat fans PLEASE throw only soft objects at me?)

For multiple eargasms, pick up The Highlander series by Karen Marie Moning, narrated by Phil Gigante. So far, the first three have been released – Beyond the Highland Mist (click for sample), To Tame a Highland Warrior (click for sample), and The Highlander’s Touch (Nov 20, 2007)- with the rest apparently to be released in sequence at two month intervals. Phil Gigante does such a good job with the female voices that I was quickly no longer aware that the narrator was a man. And what he does for the male voices… *shiver*… his different Scottish brogues gave me aural eargasm after eargasm! What an amazing talent Gigante is! My only caveat is that I seem to hit the back track button A LOT when listening to Gigante’s narration. Oh, it’s not HIS fault. Well, not really. It’s just that sometimes I get so swept away by HOW his swoonworthy character voices sound, that I forget to pay attention to WHAT they’re saying! (FYI: Phil Gigante is also the narrator for the first book in Nora Roberts’ new Sign of Seven Trilogy, Blood Brothers)

The last three books in Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series (Sookie Stackhouse) are narrated by Johanna Parker: Book 5, Dead as a Doornail (click for sample), Book 6, Definitely Dead (click for sample), and Book 7, All Together Dead (click for sample). This is a series that I initially didn’t care for because it moved too slow for me in print form. But now I can’t wait for each new release because Johanna Parker brings Sookie Stackhouse to Southern Fried life! I find myself stopping and just floating along with her smooth, small town Louisiana drawl filled with Sookie’s vulnerability and strength. Then she changes not only the pitch and tone, but also the cadence of her narration to bring all the characters in Sookie’s world to life. I notice that Book 1, Dead Until Dark (click for sample), has recently been released in audio, so I hope that bodes well for the release of all the earlier books in audio format, too.

As with the Harris’ series, I never quite heard the voice of Queen Betsy right in my head. The heroine of MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead series came across as a shallow bit of fluff to me. But thanks to narrator Nancy Wu I realized that Betsy’s irreverent snark is not to be missed (and wait till you hear Tina). All six books are available through Audible.com (click to sample).

I mentioned in Aural Pleasures 102 that “since an audio book forces the listener to slow down and read at the narrator’s pace, you will almost always discover things you never noticed before or see scenes in a different light when listening to a favorite book in audio format.” I have found that, even after multiple readings of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series and Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, I ALWAYS have new insights after listening to the audio books.

    Brilliance Audio produces Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series, and the narrator, Laural Merlington, does a heroic job of creating distinctive voices for all the characters. I particularly love the hint of Irish brogue she injects into Doyle’s voice. I’ve read the books multiple times, but I NEVER fail to catch something new every time I listen to the audio books. Brilliance also produces Moning’s Fever series audio, narrated by Joyce Bean who, to my ears, has a voice a bit too mature for our heroine. And DOH! Why was I so discombobulated with her Southern accent? Mac IS Southern, yet I never heard it in my head when I read the book. When Darkfever was first released in print, I read it, turned it over, and immediately read it a second time. Then I splurged and downloaded this one from AudioBookStandDL (see Aural Pleasures 101). In this case, the story was so engrossing that it overcame my initial awkward reactions to the narrator. And it is amazing how much more I STILL got out of the audio even though I had just read the print book twice! (click to sample Brilliance Audio)

Virgin Books Limited produces the Black Lace (yes THAT Black Lace– erotica for women) audio books (click to sample Audible.com audio). One of my all-time favorite books is A Gentlemen’s Wager by Madelynne Ellis (to be re-released in print with this luscious new cover early next year followed by the long awaited sequel, Phantasmagoria), but the audio book didn’t quite live up to my expectations. To my Midwest American ear, the narrator, Betsy Garden, sounded too contemporary (the book is set in Georgian England) and did not create the distinctive character voices I’ve come to expect. So I couldn’t settle into the audio until I just accepted her narration as a Joan Collins or a Victoria Beckham reading the book out loud. [hee] Nevertheless, I STILL managed to view a couple of scenes in a new light. It wasn’t truly disappointing, I just think it was a missed opportunity to bring even more dimension to a story that contains one of the most deliciously complex characters (Vaughan) I’ve ever read (click to sample AGW).

And the Dud Duck Award goes to…

The Raintree Trilogy (Inferno, Haunted, Sanctuary), Silhouette Nocturnes published by Harlequin Enterprises LTD. The trilogy is an enjoyable, multi-author (Linda Howard, Linda Winstead Jones, Beverly Barton), three-book story that was ruined by a bad narrator/story “fit.” Narrator Stefan Rudnicki pairs up with a different female co-narrator in each book (Hillary Huber, Theo McKell, Gabrielle de Cuir). I thought it was just a matter of acclimating myself to his style and, when Audible.com had a sale, I bought the last two books before I was finished with the first one. BIG mistake. First of all, Stefan Rudnicki should never, EVER, attempt a female voice again– he just sounds like he’s mocking women. And second, by the time I hit book three, I was gnashing my teeth and tempted to just go buy the print books so I would never have to listen to his.slow.style.of.speaking.ever.again. GAK! Buy these books in print or ebook only! (click to sample Audible.com audio… if you dare)

I’ve also downloaded some non-romance audio from Audible, too– including several episodes of Evening at the Improv and several episodes of Biography on A&E. These hold-up surprisingly well in audio format!

Bev(QB)’s review of A Lick of Frost (Meredith Gentry, Book 6) by Laurell K. Hamilton

It all started with Hamilton wondering “What if?” What if the myths of Faery were real. How would the Fae be perceived in our modern culture of paparazzi and celebrity worship?

The series centers around Meredith Gentry, an L.A. private investigator who is also a part-mortal faery princess, fifth in line to the Seelie throne, and one of only two contenders for the Unseelie throne. To be crowned Unseelie Queen, she must first give birth to an heir of the royal bloodline. If she fails, her sadistic Aunt Andais, the current queen, will seal the fate of the Unseelie by placing her demented son, Cel, on the throne instead. Surrounded by her guards (and potential kings, if they father her child), Merry must evade assassination attempts and maneuver through the complex intrigues of multiple Fae courts in what may turn out to be a race to save all of Faery.

Unlike Laurell Hamilton’s Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, the Merry Gentry series really must be read in order (see below). In fact, the world building and cast of characters is so complex it is not unusual for fans to discover that multiple readings yield previously unnoticed pertinent facts. I’ve read them several times and supplemented those readings with the audio books. It’s fascinating to note that, as many times as I read the print books, listening to the audio books brings out nuances I didn’t catch with my readings. The Anita Blake series may be more commercially successful, but the Merry Gentry series, in my opinion, truly exemplifies Laurell Hamilton’s unmatched skill in world building.

A Lick of Frost opens in Los Angeles a month after Mistral’s Kiss and the chaotic events that sent Merry and her guards fleeing for their own safety from the Unseelie sithen in St. Louis. Merry is giving her statement regarding the rape charges that have been leveled against three of her Royal Guards, Galen, Abeloec, and Rhys, by the Seelie noble, Lady Caitrin. Since it was Merry’s uncle, the Seelie King Taranis, who brought the charges to the human, rather than the Faery, justice system, and since all three of the accused can be proven innocent, the motives behind Taranis’s actions are of the greatest concern to Merry and her guards.

It quickly becomes frightfully obvious that Taranis considers himself above the laws of Faery and is endangering all of Faery by blatantly ignoring the conditions of the agreement that allow the Fae to remain on American soil. But Taranis’s manipulations prove to be almost minor compared to the other jaw-dropping events that take place in this riveting book.

There were complaints about the last book, Mistral’s Kiss, and, while I didn’t consider it a disappointment, I agree it was the weakest book in the Merry Gentry series. But Hamilton is back on track with A Lick of Frost (FYI: ALoF’s first sex scene doesn’t appear until Chapter 16). I’ve only read this book once (so far) but I think it may well end up being my favorite of the series! Events proceed at a breathtaking, spectacular pace. Plus, Rhys FINALLY appears “on stage” for some one-on-one time with Merry and we learn some of Frost’s fascinating history.

Hamilton blogged while writing A Lick of Frost that she needed to whittle down the amount of men surrounding Merry. And she does it in a world altering way! Several of the events in this book would have been expected at the end of the series, however Hamilton is anything but predictable and chose to instead transform Merry’s world in ways that leave me at a booklust filled, complete loss to even GUESS where she will go with the rest of this 8 to 15 book saga!

Grade: A+

My royal guards surround me, and my best loved-my Darkness and my Killing Frost-are always beside me, sworn to protect and make love to me. But still the threat grows greater. For despite all my carnal efforts, I remain childless, while the machinations of my sinister, sadistic Queen and her confederates remain tireless. So my bodyguards and I have slipped back into Los Angeles, hoping to outrun the gathering shadows of court intrigue. But even exile isn’t enough to escape the grasp of those with dark designs.

Now King Taranis, powerful and vainglorious ruler of faerie’s Seelie Court, has leveled accusations against my noble guards of a heinous crime-and has gone so far as to ask the mortal authorities to prosecute. If he succeeds, my men face extradition to faerie and the hideous penalties that await them there. But I know that Taranis’s charges are baseless, and I sense that his true target is me. He tried to kill me when I was a child. Now I fear his intentions are far more terrifying.
