As a fan of American-settings and western romances, I've often wondered why authors/publishers don't use the state of California more often. It really is a locale that offers a wealth of possibilities - from the gold rush, to the mountains, to the coast-line, to the desert, to large cities, to the middle of nowhere - California in the 19th century was a fascinating place. This was the main reason why I was so drawn to Kathryn Albright's debut. She sets this story near San Diego, along the southern California coast line, and gives the troubled hero the job of maintaining the local lighthouse.

The request for a review of this book that I got did not come in the traditional form, where someone sends a politely worded e-mail asking if we're ever going to read and review a favorite book. No, when I was asked to read this book, my friend Jaliya used the words "you" and "have to read this book right now or else I'll come down there and beat you" in the same sentence. And given the plot, which happens to feature things I like, namely a slightly Southern Gothic atmosphere as well as a touch of the paranormal I knew that Jaliya wouldn't have to twist my arm very hard. This is the first book I've read in this series and if the other books are this stirring, this emotional, this erotic, and this damned good, I sure as hell have been missing out. Normally ménage is not one of my favorite reads because most authors just cannot write those scenes to amount to anything. Not so in this case. And while those were some of the best scenes in the book, those love scenes between Ian and Derek are even better.
