“Mr. and Mischief” by Kate Hewitt (“Emma”)
They formed a miniseries called “The Powerful and the Pure,” which riffed on classic novels, but there are more of them. there’s a take on the Odyssey, for instance, by Kate Walker, and then there’s this one.

I actually loved, loved this book as I love all Michelle’s books. It has a fantastic opening and I adored Franco and Lexi. Was just on a writing retreat and we were all raving about this book!

Kim, I do agree with you that the husband is potrayed in a cartoonish fashion but I just laughed at the silly antics. The way I read the story the husband had married her for the money and now he’s tired of belittling her and pushing her down. Her father’s dead so he wants to take all the money and find someone of his own social consequence. I needed the laugh and the book hit the right spot for me.

I’m a Sophia Nash fan, but this one was a bit of a miss for me. The biggest reason is that it was a little difficult keeping all the characters straight. Sophia introduced quite a few characters from future books. Also, I thought the husband was written too cartoonsishly. Yes it was funny when he had to dig up his beloved gardens to look for gold, but there was never really a reason given as to why he wanted to get rid of Roxanne. I don’t think it was ever stated that he cheated even though he was interested in courting someone after Roxanne’s disappearance. Did you see anything in the book that pointed to his motivation in ridding himself of a wife?

JennH, I researched the houses before I submitted to them, including figuring out who edited what so I knew what each editor enjoyed. I also followed their blogs and Twitter accounts as much as possible. Unless you’re answering a specific call for submissions, you’re probably going to fall into general slush the first time, so it’s the luck of the draw. I’ve been extremely lucky in that I’ve had excellent editors. Each of them has taught me different things along the way. My recommendation is to follow the editors online as much as possible, and when you query, say something specific about the editor(s) you’ve enjoyed and why. Your chances of possibly falling into their inbox will probably go up!

Lynne, I think I am going to start only buying books you recommend. I seem to have exactly the same taste as you. I have to say, this one was a DNF for me. The fire department stuff was laughable even if you didn’t know anything about how fire depts work (and finding out isn’t that hard). The cardboard characters made me absolutely nuts, and the fact that the heroine is so wishy-washy about her ex made me actively dislike her.

I absolutely loved all of the *gasp* *double-gasp* and *triple gasp* moments. It was so refreshing to see a pair of lovers who had had perfectly normal healthy happy relationships (as far as possible) with OTHER people before coming to their Harlequin Happily Ever After. While I wasn’t as struck by her moment-after as you were, I do remember being surprised that after all that babble about her reputation, she apparently was completely cool with bearing a child out of wedlock. WHAT?!
But I still very much enjoyed this one – it was a nice change from typical Regency romance fare.

For me, this series ran out of steam 3 books ago. I cannot stand endless will they/won’t they plots, and Rachel and Trent need a resolution or they will turn into the supernatural Stephanie Plum and I stopped reading those a very long time ago. This is a series that needs to end rather than staggering on ad nauseum. Kim Harrison could still write books set in this world but not with Rachel as the lead.

Hi Kim – Sometimes Zee Pond is temperamental like that. We shall blame Sybil because she is busy elsewhere and will never know. ;) I agree about Kyle – he is my favorite character Julie has written. I enjoyed this book so much.

I wonder if it is too early to start whining at Julie asking who the next book is about? Hmm…
