Veena’s review of More Than Meets the Eye (Kendra Michaels, Book 10) by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen
Suspense Thriller published by Grand Central Publishing 07 Feb 23

The story kicks off with a bang, literally. A convicted serial killer takes a law enforcement team to his burial site, except the site is rigged to blow and now becomes a mass grave for law enforcement bodies.  Kendra Michaels inserts herself into the investigation, and where Kendra goes, Adam Lynch soon follows.  Kendra and Adam have caught the scent and soon they are on the trail of the mastermind.

I really like this series with its fast-paced action adventure and the deductive leaps Kendra makes, given how she can use all her other senses that she’s honed during her years of blindness.  For some reason, I did not find this particular story as compelling as I usually find the books in the series, though I am pleased that Kendra is finally going to give Adam a chance.

The concept that there is a serial killer who picks and trains partners to actually commit the crime which he plans is a novel one.  I like how Kendra and Adam follow the clues that take them down the path that leads them to identify the mastermind and then start to hunt him down.  It’s no surprise that the killer now turns his attention to Kendra and those she cares about.

The scene with Kendra’s friend is chilling and very well done. Truly, I can’t put my mind to why this book and story wasn’t as appealing to me as the others in the series, but all I can tell you is, despite some truly novel concepts, it is not my favorite in the series.

Grade: B

Summary:

After scoring a plea deal in a high-profile murder trial, serial killer James Michael Barrett leads a grim parade of law enforcement officers to the body of his last victim. At the alleged burial site, the officers swing their shovels down and are met with a strange metallic sound they weren’t expecting. In a blink, a terrific explosion rocks the woods, killing Barrett and most of the officers instantly.
The detonation is only the beginning of a shocking case for FBI consultant Kendra Michaels—a string of heinous murders in the style of the very-dead Barrett mysteriously continue, and it becomes clear that he may not have been working alone. As the crimes accelerate, Kendra reluctantly accepts help from college student Tricia Walton, the only survivor of Barrett’s attacks. But the killer has a terrifying plan that Kendra and her team are only beginning to understand.
