Veena’s review of His Improper Lady (The Mad Morelands, Book 8) by Candace Camp
Historical Romance published by HQN Books 29 Jun 21

I’m not sure when or why I stopped reading Ms. Camp’s stories, but I was delighted to pick this one up and have resolved at least to go back and catch up on the entire series, particularly since I hope that some of the characters in this book might have their stories next.

Little did Desiree Malone know that a simple break into the offices of Quick & Moreland would set off a chain of events that would not only bring her the answers she’s been searching for but a whole lot more.

Tom Quick is utterly devoted to the Morelands, knowing that he owes his life to Reed Moreland, who rescued him from the life of a pickpocket. He is friends with his contemporary Malones and now a business partner in the investigation firm. Even as he chases off the lady thief in the night, he’s an investigator and his search for clues brings him to Desiree’s door. He’s equally fascinated with the need to help Desiree find answers as he is in the lady herself.

In her search for her long lost father, Desiree and Tom uncover a conspiracy that’s been festering for years. Someone clearly does not want them to find the answers, given the attacks on both of them and even on the criminal who was responsible in an odd, unforgiveable way for raising them both and taking advantage of them.

The truth is mind boggling, and out of it all Desiree not only finds love, but she also finds a vast extended family who welcome her and her brothers into their fold.  This book has definitely rekindled my desire to read more from this author.

Grade: A

Summary:

Some family secrets were never meant to be disturbed.

It’s been a year since Tom Quick became a partner in the detective agency, Moreland & Quick, that he operates with his lifelong friend Constantine Moreland. When he catches an intruder breaking into the agency, obviously looking for something, it’s clear that a new case is afoot. But this intruder wears an alluring scent, moves like a trained acrobat…and is clearly an attractive woman.

After a hardscrabble childhood, Desiree Malone grew up to be a talented performer, and now, she wants to find her real father. All she knows is that he’s an aristocrat, and he abandoned her and her brothers when they were small. When she finds something at Moreland & Quick that gives her a lead, she can’t help but follow it.

Tom wants to help Desiree, but he’s still a little suspicious of her, even though he can’t help but be drawn to her. But as Desiree and Tom dig deeper into Desiree’s roots, they stumble on a mystery larger than either of them imagined—a mystery that threatens both their lives.
