Book CoverKristie J’s review of Outcast (Good Guys, Book 4) by Jamie Schlosser
Young Adult published by Amazon Digital Services 15 Mar 18

I went into this book blind.  I’d never heard of the author before and didn’t read any reviews.  The outline sounded interesting.  What a sweet and completely charming book this one turned out to be.  I think I had a fond smile on for the entire read.

Kayla is our heroine.  While she seems rather confident on the outside, she’s not really.  She’s been adopted by a couple, gay men, which is rather unusual in the small town they’ve recently moved to.  Her heritage is hard to identify, her skin with colour of coffee with cream but her hair is red and extremely curly.  She notices Ezra, our hero, right off the bat in their sophomore year at high school.  Thus starts a huge crush she carries for the guy that grows as she gets to know him.

Ezra is struck by Kayla right from the first time he sees her too.  Ezra, however, is extremely insecure.  Because of an accident when he was younger, his leg was permanently damaged and as a result he walks with a limp and can’t take PE.  He’s a little on the plump side and he’s often bullied by his peers.  But his heart is huge.  He loves Kayla from afar, figuring she’s way above his league.

They’ve become good friends over their high school years, but when they find out they have both carried the torch for the other, it’s just, well, magical.  They are both such sweet, tender, and caring young people.  Normally I’d be quite skeptical of people that young planning on forever with each other, but these two truly ‘see’ the other person on the inside.  After they discover their mutual feelings, they are separated when Ezra goes to summer camp for in-depth physiotherapy for his leg.  They meet again when they are both starting at the same college, and Ezra is like a new person on the outside.  But it’s the inner Ezra that Kayla fell for so deeply.  She’s mostly happy for him that he’s now becoming popular and she wishes him everything that is good.

Even doing this review makes me want to read this treasure all over again and I just finished it.  I’ve already bought two more books by this author, I’m that impressed with her writing.

Summary:

KAYLA
My infatuation with Ezra Johnson started how all obsessions begin—with a simple crush. Over the years I silently soaked up every shy smile and random act of kindness, wrestling them away to a secret place in my heart meant for unrequited love.
Because if it wasn’t for the fact that I tutor him once a week, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t even know I exist.
Then I find his sketchbook.
And it changes everything.

EZRA
There are two certainties in my life: I’ve been in love with Kayla Reynolds since I was fourteen, and I can’t have her.
I’ve spent years settling for a two-dimensional fantasy world, capturing her beauty with a pencil and paper. She’s kind, smart, gorgeous…
And she belongs to someone else.
Or so I thought.
An interesting turn of events makes me realize things aren’t always how they appear on the outside, and now I’ve got my chance to be the man she deserves.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been called a loser. The cripple. An outcast.
But maybe—just maybe—this time the good guy won’t finish last.
