Book CoverVeena’s review of Heat: A Dragon Romance (Dragon Kings, Book 12) by Donna Grant
Paranormal Romance published by St Martin’s Paperbacks 30 Jan 18

Through Nikolai’s eyes we get a clearer picture of Ulrik before he was consumed with vengeance and fury. Nikolai still feels the guilt of taking a stand against Ulrik and has slept away centuries in order to remain outside of the conflict that has been raging. For the first time, we get more than the brief glimpses of the past that Ms. Grant has allowed us thus far in the series.  What will Nikolai’s role be? Will he be able to bridge the divide with Ulrik and change the tide of the war?

Esther is a troubled soul. Sister to the MI6 agent who is a part of the inner circle at Draegan, she has paid a hefty price in this war. Kidnapped and mind raped, she fears to sleep for fear that hidden triggers in her brain could be triggered. Nikolai, with his deep attraction to her and his special brand of magic, might be the solution to Esther tracing her steps and finding when her brain was altered and hopefully reversing what was done to her.

Nikolai and Esther start off their quest in London, trying to re-trace Esther’s steps. Their journey takes them to many interesting places where they meet many interesting characters and find clues that drive the story further. Nikolai also has his own personal quest to find Ulrik and appeal to the humanity and heart that he knows Ulrik once possessed.  I’ll leave you to read the book to find out how it all turns out for both of them.

Though this is Esther and Nikolai’s story, Ms. Grant does a masterful job of taking the story a giant leap forward. Don’t be fooled, we still have more questions than answers, but for the first time I feel like we are getting to the heart of the truth, even as the plot thickens.  There are still many secrets the author is keeping close to her chest, such as who Rhi’s dragon king is, which is one that I know many fans, including me, are itching to know.

I’m excited and engaged again and can’t wait to see where the series will go next.

Grade: B

Summary:

He knew her round eyes and the deep shade of brown along with the band of black that encircled her irises. He knew the slope of her breasts, the indent of her waist, and the flare of her hips. He knew the way she preferred to wear muted colors to help her blend in with a crowd. It had taken one look to put all that to memory, but he found his eyes going to her again and again, as if he couldn’t get enough.
Nikolai is a dragon shapeshifter who knows well the meaning of loss. Orphaned and raised to be a Dragon King, he never accepts defeat. Now, Nikolai prefers his solitude. . .until a beautiful, irresistible woman calls upon him for help—and Nikolai’s whole world goes up in flames.
Ever since MI5 agent Esther woke to discover her mind taken over with magic, she feels like a stranger to herself. She looks to a notorious dragon, one who has the power to help her find her memory. But as she and Nikolai come closer to discovering what really happened to her, a dangerous passion ignites between them. Can this lone Dragon King help the woman he’s grown to love to uncover the truth about her past—or will a deep and fiery danger tear them both apart in Heat, the next Dark Kings novel by New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant.
