Book CoverVeena’s review of Mind Game (Eve Duncan, Book 22) by Iris Johansen
Romantic Thriller published by St. Martin’s Press 24 Oct 17

This is a great blend of romance, suspense, and action, sprinkled with a strong dose of supernatural. The twists and turns of the plot will keep readers guessing, even as they enjoy engaging with all the familiar characters from the series.

Jane is a dreamer. Her vivid dreams of Cira have lead to advancing plot lines in various stories from Ms. Johansen, the most recent being the search for Cira’s treasure at the banks of a beautiful loch hidden in remote Scotland.  Now Jane’s dreams have changed. A new face has joined the old and familiar. An increasingly desperate young woman is trying to reach out to Jane, begging for a rescue from her current wretched circumstances.  As Jane feverishly tries to capture her dreams on canvas, she feels Lisa, her dream woman, slipping away. Who is this young woman and why is Jane dreaming of her? Will she get to her in time to rescue her?

As Jane wings back to Scotland to continue in the search for Cira’s treasures, she calls in the heavy artillery in the form of Joe and Eve to help her. As it happens her nemesis, Seth Caleb, is the one who’s going to help her put together the clues and mount a rescue.  As they work together, Jane and readers finally learn about Seth’s shadowy past and gain new insights into what drives him and how he became who he is today.

With Lisa successfully rescued, the focus turns back to the treasure.  A motley crew of people of different ages from different walks of life and other books in the series all gather at the campfire to supplement MacDuff’s lighting technology to pierce the fog and find a way to retrieve the treasure.  In order to truly navigate this book, you need to have read a lot of books in the Eve Duncan/Jane McGuire series.

I really enjoy these books with their interesting mix of down-to-earth dialogue and woo-woo supernatural tones and can’t to see what the author has in store for some of these characters.

Grade: B

Summary:

Mind Game takes Jane MacGuire back to Scotland where she continues her search for the treasure she’s been chasing for years. But now she’s being plagued by dreams of a girl in danger. Who is this girl, and what is she trying to tell Jane? And will Jane figure it out before it’s too late—for her and the mysterious young woman? Things are further complicated when Seth Caleb comes back into Jane’s life. This time he’s the one in trouble, and Jane will find herself pulled unexpectedly into his world as she fights to save him.

With the adventure, intrigue, and explosive energy that Iris Johansen fans love, Mind Game is a high-octane thriller that readers won’t be able to put down.
