Book CoverVeena’s review of Breath Of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles, Book 2) by Amanda Bouchet
Romantic Fantasy published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 03 Jan 17

This story is a thrill ride, chock full of adventures right out of the pages of Greek mythology.   Cat has hidden in obscurity for some years, denying her heritage and her prophesied role in the affairs of Thalyria.  In this chapter she faces a variety of challenges to take her rightful place by Griffin’s side and bring her prophecy to life.

With the conquest of Sinta by Griffin’s family, Thalyria is ripe for change.  Kidnapping Cat and getting the kingmaker on his side positions Griffin to achieve ambitions that are a lot bigger than readers could imagine. As it turns out, Cat is the key to fulfilling his ambitions and then some, since she’s fated to become a lot more than a hidden weapon as she finally owns her heritage and faces down the myriad challenges that come their way.

From the journey to the Chaos Wizard to the stealing of the fleece and forging an alliance with the centaurs, readers will enjoy a nice adrenaline rush as Cat and her team face down the various challenges and fantastic mythological creatures.  Cat’s developing relationship with Griffin’s family and the kinship and camaraderie between all the members of Beta team add a nice emotional element that elevates this story out of the ordinary.

Cat reminds me of Xena, the Warrior Princess, heroine of the popular television show by that name as she wins challenge after challenge and surviving against all odds.  She is clearly favored of the Gods and has a great destiny that becomes clearer as the story evolves.  With Griffin at her side, Cat is unstoppable. There are plenty of surprises that will keep readers on their toes.

I’m not sure how the conclusion in the trilogy will play out, but I’d like to see some of the supporting cast get their stories as well.

Grade: A
