Book CoverVeena’s review of Her Rogue Alpha (X-Ops, Book 5) by Paige Tyler
Paranormal Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 06 Sep 16

A smooth ride to romance this very definitely is not. Jayson, an ex-special forces soldier is stateside suffering from sever injuries sustained on his last tour of duty when he meets Layla, a gorgeous feline shifter. Head over heels for him, she does all she can to get him on a path to recovery so they can explore the attraction between them. Jayson is such a curmudgeon at the beginning that I had to wonder what Layla saw in him to stick by him and jeopardize her own future. Fortunately the author delivers us a well-told story with some serious adventure.

Jayson chooses to be injected with the hybrid serum, even though he knows the truth behind the possible outcome. He feels a chance at a possible healthy life, partnering Layla in the field is worth the price of risking his life, which is shambles anyway.  Fortunately his gamble pays off, because Layla’s friends and family intervene and tone down the impact of the serum.  Unfortunately he’s dispatched on a mission in a war-torn region with a partner who hates him, instead of Layla, who’s on a mission of her own.

Layla rushes to Jayson’s side and finds that his mission has developed an unexpected twist. As the two unravel these new threads and try to stay ahead of maniacal soldiers armed with a few guns and no backup, their story starts to pick up.

Dreya is a burglar who achieves the coup of a life time that turns really bad. As friends and competitors around her are tortured and dying, she’s trying to do her best to survive. It’s clear she doesn’t know that she’s a shifter as she deals with her freaky powers.  Fortunately for Dreya, the DCO, in the form of Langdon and Ivy, come to her rescue, so she lives to fight another time. I expect we’ll be seeing her and that police detective who seems to have some interesting powers of his own in a future book very soon.

We’ve known for some time that the DCO has a deep schism with two very opposing sides. The agenda of the other side is still not very clear, other than it is evil and mercenary. But I expect we’ll learn more as the battle lines get more clearly drawn. Hopefully we’ll also learn about the mystery behind John and Adam. Layla, however, has just traded a favor to Dick, who is very definitely on the wrong side. So clearly she and Jayson still have a part to play in a murky future, but I just know that this favor is going to come back to haunt her and those she loves in the very near term.

This books seems to contain a story within a story within a story with some excitement, but not the spine-tingling thrills that this series usually delivers. In my opinion, it seems to be setting the stage for what I anticipate will play out in the next few books in the series.

Grade: B-
