Book CoverVeena’s review of Flash Of Fire (Firehawks, Book 14) by M.L. Buchman
Contemporary Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 03 May 16

I’ve learned a lot about fighting fire as well as the different classes of helicopters and drones that are used by the elite fire fighting Mount Hood Aviation team during the reading of this series. Kudos to the author that these technical facts are delivered in a way that builds the story rather than distracting the reader from the main event. Robin Harrow is one of the more interesting characters in the series, and I so enjoyed seeing her find her feet – or should I say her seat – in the MHA while she slowly but surely figures out the secrets of love and success.

Even as his teammates on the MHA team are pairing up, veteran Mickey Hamilton is definitely not ready to settle down for one woman. However, his first meeting with Robin Harrow, who’s flying command in Emily Beale’s absence, has him quickly re-prioritizing his life’s goals. I guess there’s no choice when its the “ONE.” Robin, however, is going to take a lot longer to get where Mickey is and the path to that discovery, while fun, is torturous, involving navigating dangerous rapids and enemy missiles over hostile territory.

Robin is a very interesting and intriguing character. A third-generation single woman determined to sex him and leave him is so not prepared for being a part of the MHA team. As she blossoms into her full potential as a leader, for the first time in her life she bonds with other women. Quiet Denise is her first conquest when she recognizes her caliber and tells her that she has no need to review and sign off on any service records after Denise certifies the aircraft as airworthy.

I don’t know if I missed it before, but the interaction between Robin and Mark brings out a totally new side to poker face Mark Henderson. Emily Beale Henderson, pregnant with her second child, is side-lined, giving up her seat to Robin but keeping a close eye and hand in the unfolding events. It’s an interesting twist to see this couple play cupid to the unfolding love story.

This time the team splits up right off the bat, and Robin and Mickey conduct their relationship under the very public eye of a tent on a field or right out in the middle of the grass where they often collapse from tiredness. The very first conflict of the story arises when Mickey professes his love over pancakes made from his family’s secret recipe. All the married couples now share the good and bad in their own stories, as they counsel the couple over their rough patch. But life’s short and soon the team is flying off to Korea as a part of their hidden agenda of the MHA. Under the cover of the fire there is a covert operation that involves a top-secret operation that only this team can help execute. Lola and Tim join the team as Lola rides second chair with Robin.

All in all, a great addition to the Night Stalkers and Firehawks series.  I’m quite intrigued how this series will evolve when Emily comes back from maternity leave.

Grade: A

The elite firefighters of Mount Hood Aviation fly into places even the CIA can’t penetrate.

FROM WILDFIRE TO GUNFIRE
When former Army National Guard helicopter pilot Robin Harrow joins Mount Hood Aviation, she expect to fight fires for only one season. Instead, she finds herself getting deeply entrenched with one of the most elite firefighting teams in the world. Mickey Hamilton loves flying, firefighting, and women, in that order. But when Robin Harrow roars across his radar, his priorities go out the window. On a critical mission deep in enemy territory, their past burns away and they must face each other. Their one shot at a future demands that they first survive the present-together.
