Book CoverVeena’s review of A Covert Affair (Deadly Ops, Book 5) by Katie Reus
Romantic Suspense published by Signet 01 Mar 16

Nathan’s close brush with death on a mission makes him more reflective of his misspent youth and lost love. Before he can drum up the courage to see if he has a chance to find her and attempt to rewrite his future, fate leads him right to her. But fate sure has a twisted sense of humor, because he finds her on a date with his chief suspect while he’s undercover posing as a bit of an unsavory character himself. The story takes off with a bang and there are enough surprises to keep the reader engaged. Bit …

Amelia Rios has pulled herself up from the life she was born into and become successful through a dint of hard work and opportunity. Through her restaurant chain and a local community center that she supports, Amelia is committed to helping young women with mentoring and opportunity. Unfortunately for her, young women are disappearing, many of them from her restaurant and the center she supports. Nathan can’t reconcile that the girl he once loved and lost could be involved in a life of crime, so he needs to prove her innocent. Almost as he’s processing her innocence, his team wants to recruit her to get eyes and ears on their suspect, whom she’s dating.

Amelia is a kick-ass heroine. She’s clawed her way from her modest beginnings with her hard work and perseverance and is now a successful business owner.  Her strong sense of community and commitment to helping other young women succeed takes her to the local community center. When girls associated with her restaurants and the community center begin to go missing, she’s just as determined to help her youthful lover and his FBI team find justice for these girls. It seems neither has forgotten the other and they quickly pick up where they left off so many years ago.  However, there’s something missing. Amelia is convinced that Nathan is hiding something from her and unless he can come clean with her, their future together is going to be pretty short lived.

Nathan has a hard time managing his personal and professional priorities. He’s loved Amelia forever and now that fate has brought her back in his life, he wants to hold on with everything he has. Unfortunately, he’s in the middle of an op, he’s lying to her, and now he’s gotten her involved in his op, putting her in danger. He comes across as a bit of a caveman, but Amelia sure puts him in his place.  It seems like all Nathan’s fears come true when Amelia is kidnapped and he needs to get it together to rescue her.

The plot is interesting, the suspense is excellent, the pacing good, and yet the story did not suck me in like some of the others in this series.

Grade: B
