Book CoverVeena’s review of Rebel Bride (Lust in the Tudor Court, Book 2) by Elizabeth Moss
Historical Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 01 Dec 15

This steamy romance picks up the sexual exploits of Susannah Tyrell and Hugh Beaufort that are hinted at in the Wolf Bride.  Set against the dramatic background of a court in flux as Anne Boleyn’s reign comes to an end and Jane Seymour ascends to the throne, the author weaves in historical fact with fiction to give us a tale to remember.

Susannah is definitely not a typical miss of the times. From the beginning she is determined to elude the marriage planned by her father to his elderly friend and find her own independence and happiness.  Hugh Beaufort strikes sparks in her, which she indulges to the fullest with no intentions of ever becoming a biddable wife.  She hates the sedate country life and longs for the excitement of court. Taking matters into her own hands, she runs away from home and makes her way to court by way of a few wrong turns on her journey.

She has reason to be grateful when Hugh rescues her on the road to London and escorts her to his sister and brother-in-law at court. She is a headstrong, passionate woman who has no qualms about exploiting the explosive chemistry between her and Hugh to seduce him into a relationship, even as she resists all his attempts to woo her into marriage.

At court she finds that her beauty and boldness attracts the wrong attention, including the King’s, and that the court definitely does not live up to the promise that she envisioned from her quiet country existence. Hugh might be a rising courtier in King Henry’s court, as he travels to all the monasteries assessing their wealth for the King, yet he’s snared by Susannah from the very first and unable to resist her, even as she turns down every marriage proposal he makes.  I am not sure why Susannah, who loves him, resists marrying him, even as her father seems to be forcing her into marriage with an old man.

For you history buffs this is a very authentic period piece with a lot of lusty romance and that’s not even counting the dramatics between the King and his string of paramours.

Grade: B

Summary:

HE IS UNDER HER SPELL…

Hugh Beaufort, favored courtier of King Henry VIII, likes his women quiet and biddable. But Susannah Tyrell is neither of these things. She is feisty, beautiful, opinionated and brave. And Hugh is fascinated by her-despite himself.

When Susannah pulls an outrageous stunt and finds herself lost in the wilds of England, Hugh must go to her rescue. Neither of them is prepared for the dangers that lie in wait. But most deadly of all is their forbidden desire for one another. Hugh has long held himself in check, but even his iron will has its limits as they remain alone together in the forest, far from the restraints of court…
