Book CoverVeena’s review of Target Engaged (Delta Force, Book 1) by M.L. Buchman
Romantic Suspense published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 01 Dec 15

“Strong Women and the Men They Deserve” is definitely illustrative not just of Carla and Kyle, who are the protagonists in this story, but of the types of stories that Mr. Buchman delivers to his readers. Carla is making history in being one of the first women to make the grade for Delta Force training. I like how the author ties her story into his Night Stalker series and the characters that we’ve met there as he launches this new spin-off. It doesn’t hurt to find the same camaraderie between this team as we’ve seen in the other teams that are such an integral part of both the Night Stalkers and the Firehawks.

Carla has only one aspiration when she shows up for the delta force training: to be successful and live up to the military fame that her brother and mother have earned. She has her goal firmly fixed and nothing or no one will cause her to deviate. It’s fortunate that Sgt. Kyle Reeves knows how to be patient, because by the time they’ve graduated as full-fledged operatives, he’s snuck in under her defenses and made a place for himself.

The author does a great job of describing the grueling physical training regime that Delta Force recruits go through, as well as the equally important psychological and out-of-the-box thinking that makes them the top operatives for this country. Carla definitely pays attention and thinks out of the box as proven by her novel approach to the graduation exercise in which she is second to only the legendary Delta Force colonel Michael Gibson.

The love interest and physical awareness between Carla and Kyle is kindled from the very beginning, but they are teammates as well as lovers and, interestingly enough, bunk mates, because the navy hasn’t planned for one of them being a woman. Kyle is a guy and clearly he’s going to put his foot in it somehow, someway, but fortunately when he does, all the Night Stalker women officers are around to lend Carla their shoulder. The missions they execute definitely keep the adrenaline running on the part of the reader.

Mr. Buchman has definitely shown us that the military and romance definitely can mix.
