Veena’s review of Lethal Consequences (Aegis Series, Book 2) by Elisabeth Naughton
Romantic Suspense published by Montlake Romance 20 Jan 15

This is a well-paced action adventure story.  Landon Miller is a Black Ops assassin, who is temporarily working with a security agency called Aegis while he recovers from a mission gone bad. During his time with Aegis, he rescues shy school teacher Olivia Wolfe, who develops a serious case of hero worship for him – so much so that she surprises him at the tail end of his last assignment for Aegis. Unfortunately, the surprise is on her when she’s kidnapped by the most dangerous terrorist organization in Europe.  The story just takes off from there and the excitement keeps building to a climatic crescendo.

Landon is so determined not to sully the innocent Olivia that he hurts her far worse by trying to maintain his distance from her. He seeks physical release but is stymied by Olivia, who surprises him in his hotel room with another woman. Before he can find a reasonable explanation, they’re kidnap victims and the kidnappers figure out that Olivia is the chink in his armor.

Fortunately, they escape and try to stay one step ahead of the kidnappers, as Olivia’s sister, another Aegis agent, mounts a rescue.  Poor Olivia definitely sees an entirely new side to Landon as he tries to keep her safe and ahead of the cabal chasing them.  Even after they’re rescued, it’s not over because Landon is keeping secrets from the government agency he works for.

The Aegis crew rally around and provide support as Landon tries to neutralize the threat against him and now Olivia. Their physical attraction is a conflagration that might burn them up before the bad guys can find and destroy them. Olivia’s character definitely develops through the story as she morphs from a sweet innocent into a woman who knows what she wants and how to go after it.

I have not read the first book in the series and for the most part it did not bother me, though I am definitely looking forward to reading forthcoming books in the series.

Grade: B

Summary:
Three months after rescuing Olivia Wolfe from danger, Aegis Security operative Landon Miller still can’t stop thinking about her, even though she’s off-limits in every way possible. Knowing he’s leaving Aegis and returning to the DIA soon, Landon decides it’s time for their flirty online relationship to end. But Olivia can’t stop thinking about Landon, either. On a whim, she takes a leave of absence from her teaching job to surprise him in Barcelona—and arrives to find a sexy redhead in his hotel room.

Things aren’t always what they seem, though. Landon’s would-be one-night stand is really a member of the Red Brotherhood, a terrorist group targeting Landon for information on a lethal bioweapon. And now Olivia is unwittingly ensnared in their deadly plot, too. Forget escaping emotionally unscathed; Olivia just wants to make it home alive. Yet to survive, she’ll have to put her trust in the very man who not only broke her heart, but whose lies now threaten both their lives.
