Veena’s review of Soul Scorched (Dragon Kings, Book 6) by Donna Grant
Paranormal Romance published by St. Martins Paperbacks 30 Jun 15

Each new book in this series inches the story a little further, keeping  readers on the edge of their seat, waiting to see what comes next. As new truths are revealed, the suspense kicks up another notch as well.  In an interesting twist, the readers know some of the facts while the kings know other facts, keeping both sides guessing about what to expect and keeping the stories rich and alive. A lot of new characters are being introduced into the series as the sleeping dragon kings are awakened to help deal with the threatening danger, and with all the various threads that are in play at this moment, it’s sometimes hard to keep everything straight, though Ms. Grant does a great job of giving us background and history as necessary. Central to this story are Darcy and Warwick, who are both brand new characters we’ve never met before.

Darcy is a druid who grew up on Skye but left and settled in Edinburg to escape from the restrictions of her childhood. Free to make her own choices, she chooses to help Ulrik release the binding on his magic and continues to be one of his supporters, even as she meets and falls in love with Warwick.  I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but the truths that are revealed in this book about the repercussions of helping Ulrik are surprising and continue to build the interest level in upcoming books in the series.

Warwick is a loner and has been sleeping in his cave until shortly before the troubles began for the Dragon Kings. With the acceleration of the attacks by the dark, he’s dispatched to keep an eye on Darcy and extract what information he can get out of her.  It is inevitable that he falls in love.  We can start to see the cracks in the relationships between the kings and Con as the seeds of discord continue to bear fruit and the danger continues to accelerate.

Rhi is one of my favorite characters in this series and I definitely want to know who her lover is. Having braved and survived the chains of Mordare, she continues to fight the darkness within her. Her book, and her journey along with her king, is definitely a much awaited story in the series as the tension continues to build with her finding herself at odds with her queen and the light fae.

All in all this is a great not-to-be-missed entry in the series.

Grade: A

Her power is a blessing.
Born on the Isle of Skye, Darcy is a beautiful woman of many gifts. Fortune-telling is her forte, and she remains the only Druid who could unlock the secrets–and desires–of a Dragon King. His name is Warrick. And now that Darcy’s seen into his dragon heart, nothing will ever be the same…His passion is a curse.
Warrick never intended to put Darcy in harm’s way. But ever since she revealed a shocking truth, Darcy has been hunted by the Dark Fae, who want to use her powers for their own evil purposes. Now it’s up to Warrick to do whatever it takes to keep the woman who sets his soul on fire safe. But protecting Darcy means putting himself–and his entire race–in jeopardy. Is his desperate longing for one woman worth the risk of losing everything…for eternity?
