I was a bit skeptical that this genre would be my cup of tea, but, in retrospect, I am so glad that I reached out and picked up the first book in this fabulous series. Instead of viewing history through a distorted lens, I like the alternative reality of Victorian London spawned by the author’s imagination. Bec McMasters takes a fabulous tongue-in-cheek approach to the division between blue-blooded aristocrats and the common people, liberally using paranormal elements like vampires, werewolves, etc. to add additional depth.
This book takes up almost immediately where the last book leaves off. Garret, formerly Sir Jasper Lynch’s right hand, is struggling in his position as temporary head of the Night Hawks and fighting his newly wakened passions for his partner Perry. Try as he might it’s proving to be impossible to go back to the original status quo. To further complicate matters, there are gruesome murders demanding his attention.
Perry’s equilibrium is off as well. Her feelings for Garret aren’t new, but now that they’re out in the open, and, resonating with Garret, it’s impossible to keep a lid on them. Plus, these murders and her discovery of a madman’s laboratory are very close to her own personal history, which she thought she had left behind ten years ago when she first joined the Night Hawks.
Danger surrounds Perry and Garret try as he seems unable to keep her safe, particularly since Perry seems determined to sacrifice herself. Prince Albert, Victoria’s consort, is not painted in a very flattering light and, try as I might, I can’t recall much of him from history, but the opening of the crystal palace and the wonderful inventions that were introduced to Londoners definitely are woven very deftly into the story.
There are several light and dark shades Ms. McMasters weaves together to create a very compelling story that holds the reader’s attention, making it an excellent read.
