Book CoverVeena’s review of Against The Tide (The Brodies of Alaska, Book 3) by Kat Martin
Romantic Suspense published by Zebra 26 May 15

This story opens with murder which will get you engaged and adrenaline pumping from the get-go.  It’s such a senseless waste of a young life struck down in its prime that you’ll be engaged right along with Liv and Rafe to find the killers and bring them to justice.  Of course, there’s a lot more to the story than a simple murder and the chilling reality of the facts that emerge  will keep you turning pages way into the night as happened to me.

Rafe has lived in his corner of Alaska happy with his fishing charters and bachelor lifestyle. A late night phone call from the police, alerting him to the murder of a promising employee, plunges him knee deep into investigating the whys and wherefores.

The injustice of a promising young man snuffed out before his time and the deep sadness of the young man’s fiancé pulls Liv into Rafe’s investigation as she tries to deliver her own brand of justice. Teamed together, the attraction between the two of them quickly moves them beyond merely investigating murder.

I love a glimpse of the life in Valdez, Alaska, especially once I was reminded of the ugly oil spill and disaster that had occurred so many years ago.  The story keeps the reader hopping as these two search for clues, sometimes collaborating with the police and sometimes not. Even more intriguing is the fact that the reader has more clues than the protagonists, though the actual plot remains hidden until almost the very end.  Woven into the entire plot is Liv’s past that rears its ugly head at the appropriate moment.

Excellent pacing, wonderful chemistry, and an interesting cast of characters kept me enthralled and involved  such that I definitely did not want to put the book down, so I kept reading until there was no more to read.  There are some great new characters and I’m looking forward to moving to Seattle, Washington with the next cast.

Grade: A
