Veena’s review of Chase Me (Broke and Beautiful, Book 1) by Tessa Bailey
Contemporary Romance published by Avon Impulse 17 Mar 15

This is the start of a new series featuring three girls who become roommates in New York City. First up is Roxy Cumberland, an aspiring actress, who’s estranged from her family for having the courage to pursue her dreams. As a struggling artist on her way to her big break, she delivers singing telegrams, which leads her to knock on the door of gorgeous playboy Louis McNally’s brownstone dressed as a pink rabbit.  Without any visible way of getting in touch with her, ingenious Louis hires her to deliver another telegram to himself.  This definitely does not make a promising start to a romance, but…

This is definitely an engaging and different love story, though it does follow a more conventional story line after this unique kickoff.  Louis has to back peddle and make up for his faux pas, but he’s not a rich, handsome bachelor for nothing. Fortunately for him fate gives him a chance to play knight errant when he rescues Roxy from a raunchy bachelor party, when desperation forces her to take on a stripper gig. As he gets to know her better and see her talent for himself, he goes one step further and facilitates an audition for her through one of his contacts.  I just knew this one was going to back fire on him and it does in spectacular fashion.

Roxy, in the meantime, lands in an apartment with some very interesting roommates, who all have their own stories which I can’t wait to read more about. One thing is clear: they are definitely very pro Louis and Roxy’s romance.  Threaded into this story is even more girl power in the form of Louis’ sisters with whom he shares a close relationship and who find themselves giving him relationship advice along the way. Definitely having the sisters makes him a strong, empathetic guy.

As is true in all romances, there are conflicts that arise and a big problem that derails their budding romance. Can the two lovers find their way back together? Since this is a romance, the answer is somewhat obvious, but the path they take and the advice they get along the way makes it a cute read.  I am definitely looking forward to each of Roxy’s roommates finding their own romances.

Grade: B

Summary:

College drop-out Roxy Cumberland moved to New York with dreams of becoming an actress, but her dwindling bank account is quickly putting the kibosh on that fantasy. To make some quick cash, she signs up to perform singing telegrams. Her first customer is a gorgeous, cocky Manhattan trust-funder if she ever laid eyes on one. And what could be more humiliating than singing an ode to his junk, courtesy of his last one night stand? Maybe the fact that she’s dressed in a giant pink bunny costume…

After a night out to celebrate winning his last case, lawyer Louis McNally the Second isn’t prepared for the pounding in his head or the rabbit serenading him from the front door. But the sassy wit and sexy voice of the girl behind the mask intrigue him, and one look at her stunning face—followed by a mind-blowing kiss against his doorjamb—leaves Louis wanting more.

Roxy doesn’t need a spoiled rich boy who’s had everything in life handed to him on a Tiffany platter. But there’s more to Louis than his sexy surface and he’s determined to make Roxy see it…even if it means chasing her all over NYC.
