Veena’s review of Blood Assassin (The Sentinels, Book 3) by Alexandra Ivy
Urban Fantasy published by Zebra Books 30 Dec 14

This book takes us deeper into the intriguing world of  high bloods and the sentinels who guard them.  Humans fear them but have no qualms about using their gifts when they need them, and so the high bloods who live in Valhalla often assist the police in kidnappings and homicides.  In the case of the kidnapping of the daughter of a renowned mercenary, the request comes in directly from the father in a definitely a very unorthodox way.

Bas, it turns out, is an assassin who works for the highest bidder and has gathered around him high bloods who do not want to live and answer to the structure of Valhalla. He uses his skill and talents to spell Serra into coming to him and puts a ticking time bomb in her body in order to force her to help him find his kidnapped daughter.  Where Serra is, Fane can’t be far behind, even if hithertofore he’s given the impression that he’s completely immune to Serra’s charms.

There seem to be three distinct threads in this story. Serra and Fane are at center stage as they work together against the clock to keep Serra alive and bring Bas’ daughter back safe. At the same time they definitely exercise their sexual chemistry.  Now that Fane has let himself off the leash where Serra is concerned, it seems that he can’t seem to stop his hands and other body parts from roaming over and in her.

There’s definitely something going on between Wolfe and the Mave, as they embark on their own quest.  It will be interesting to see how this story plays out in future books, because they both seem such incredible characters, and, while we have a small glimpse into the Mave’s back story, I can’t wait to learn more about Wolfe.

Bas, who has history with the Mave, has definitely been outmaneuvered in this story. He’s being held to hostage against his daughter’s safety and yet for all his mercenary ways can’t let the world dissolve in chaos and devastation, even to bring his little girl home in one piece. I think there’s definitely room for redemption in the future for him, especially since we catch glimpses of Myst, the little girl’s mother.  That is one story I’m looking forward to reading, and, if I’m not mistaken, based on how this one ends we’ll soon get to read that one.

This is my favorite kind of book.  The story plays out over an urban background that has a touch of reality, while the characters allow the author to let her imagination soar. All mixed in with lethal enemies and the promise of a future showdown, while we get to work on a nice suspense, makes for a story that reels you in and keeps you vested all the way to the end.

I definitely like this new series and can’t wait to see it continue to evolve.
