Veena’s review of The Highlander Next Door (Spellbound Falls, Book 6) by Janet Chapman
Paranormal Romance published by Jove 26 Aug 14

Lately I’ve become jaded and haven’t been reading my romances with the usual rose-colored glasses. Horrors of horrors, I’ve even given out a lot more Cs than As lately. Thank you, Ms. Chapman, for this delightful romance which has definitely restored my belief in the magic to be found in curling up with a great book and cheering the happily ever after.

Niall MacKeage, the time-traveling Scottish laird turned modern sheriff, uses an interesting blend of ancient wisdom mixed in with modern tools and techniques to protect the townspeople of Spellbound Falls and Turtleback from unruly fathers and husbands, demons and gods, and all manner of strange things.

Birch, with her French expletives and her distrust of men and firearms, is a delightful heroine who hides her vulnerabilities under a seemingly tough outer skin. Determined to protect weak and defenseless women and children, she has no regard for her own safety, to the chagrin of Sheriff MacKeage, who finds himself coming to her rescue time and time again. I love how Birch is just as fearless in going after what she wants when she knocks on his door, whether it is to use him as her personal teddy bear or fuck toy.

It’s a good thing that Niall has patience bred in him from his time as a laird in medieval Scotland, since faint hearted is definitely not going to win this fair lady, nor is he going to get any help from the magic-wielding denizens of the town. When danger finds his lady love, despite all his efforts to keep it from him, he uses all his resources from ancient Atlantean warriors, to his magical cousins to ex-special forces friends and even modern gods to fight her battles and keep her safe.

There are so many cute moments, such as the old couple whom Niall engineers a reunion for and Birch’s novel solution to ensure that the tracker that Niall gives her can’t be found by the bad guys. This story captured my attention from the get go and held it through the entire book.

Grade: A+

Summary:

A delightful tale of a young woman who’s had enough of men…until she meets her spectacular new neighbor.

Legend has it love is carried on the rising mists of Spellbound Falls, and not even time-traveling highlanders are immune to its magic…

Birch Callahan has seen the trouble men can cause. After witnessing her mother’s four marriages, Birch now runs a women’s shelter and doesn’t want a man in her life. But there’s something about her neighbor, Niall MacKeage. Birch can’t figure out how the cop can be so big and gruff and yet so insightful and compassionate—and sexy. Or how she’s falling for a man who acts like someone from the twelfth century.
