Veena’s review of Lord Of The Storm (Coalition, Book 1) by Justine Davis
Futuristic Romance re-issued by Bell Books 20 Jun 14

The first thing that caught my eye about this book is the mysterious man in a hood with the terrific abs on the cover and then my heart began racing when I saw the battle cruiser in the background. When Shaylah Graymist, victorious fighter pilot for the intergalactic coalition, is presented with a golden pleasure slave called Wolf within the first chapter, I knew this was going to be a great read.

Shaylah abhors slavery which her friends and colleagues take for granted as a part of their privileged life style. Nevertheless, Wolf manages to break through all her walls and resistance and she commits to keeping him safe during their time together on vacation. They talk about his home planet which has always fascinated Shaylah, since her parents spent many vacations there and actually conceived her in an act of love and bonding while visiting there.

Unfortunately the coalition waits for no one and there definitely seems to be action someplace in the galaxy as various crews are recalled to active duty, including Shaylah. Imagine her dismay when she finds that her crew is being deployed to Trios to be a part of putting down a rebellion on the planet. Heartsick, she’s able to evade any action and returns posthaste to Wolf, only to learn that he’s had a strong reaction during her absence and has been sold to a planet which is the end of the road for rebellious slaves.

The story swept me in and got me fully vested in the characters. I gasped and rejoiced with them as they faced down enemies, disasters, and found love, despite all the obstacles in their path. I enjoyed Shaylah’s ruse of using her battle cruiser as a Trojan horse in a replica of the legends from the history of Trios. I also enjoyed seeing how her name and reputation alone is enough to face down enemies in hostile airspace.

Wolf has a lot of secrets that are definitely going to surprise Shaylah, when she learns all of them, but it’s all good and definitely worth waiting for. This is a first for me with this author and this is an old book that has been republished in e-format; otherwise, I might have missed reading this book and what a mistake it would have been. I see from Ms. Davis’ website that she has another book featuring her friend Califa, presenter of slaves, which I have also purchased in paperback since that is the only format available at this time.

I am definitely sorry that the author is not writing any other futuristic romances that I can see. It’s definitely an underserved genre.

Grade: A

Summary:

Her every wish is his command. He lives only to serve her desires.

A warrior. A sex slave from a conquered world.

What will he do to her if she sets him free?

Shaylah Graymist, ace fighter pilot for a brutal intergalactic Coalition, is given a slave as a reward for heroism in battle. The incredibly virile slave named Wolf wears a collar which controls him completely, allowing her to make him do anything she wants. Yet Shaylah has an old-fashioned belief in love and refuses to take advantage of him. A tense friendship grows between her and Wolf, along with deep desires he refuses to admit. The Coalition destroyed his people. He won’t betray their memory.

When Shaylah returns to battle, Wolf rebels and is sold to a prison colony. She frees him, and together they journey to his home planet. As she learns more about Wolf, she begins to question her loyalty to the Coalition, and the passions between them burn out of control.
