Veena’s review of Voodoo ‘N’ Vice (Galactic Alliance, Book 3) by K.C. Burns
Futuristic Gay Romance published by Carina Press 26 May 14

I was so excited to see Galactic Alliance in the title that I neglected to note that this is a Gay romance featuring an M/M couple, which is not really something I normally read. It wasn’t until I was reading about the first time Gideon saw Kai and his reaction to him that I realized the genre, by which time I determined to continue to read. Please do not point out that I must be totally dumb to have missed all the signs like the book blurb or the cover, but, hey, what can I say. Anyhow, I have read many ménage stories feature f/m/m action, so I was able to focus on the overall story line, which I found interesting on its own merits.

Gideon is a moral, sanctimonious prig focused on duty above all else. When he gets into trouble for following orders and placed on a forced leave of absence, he wanders into a bar to kill time, where he sees a male dancer, Kai, who fires his imagination in more ways than one. It turns out that he’s not alone in his attraction. So, for the duration of his leave, they spend time together exploring their attraction, and then Gideon goes back to his cold, sterile world, leaving the fire and warmth of Kai behind him.

Kai’s roommate, who is an escort, comes home bloody and drugged. Kai reaches for the one person on the planet that he feels can help him. The last number Gideon had dialed from his phone when they had summoned help for a drugged-out homeless guy on the street is still in the memory. When he dials it he gets help, the fleet commander himself and Captain of the Criminal Division, his erstwhile boyfriend Gideon.

Well, things move pretty quickly after that. Kai gets the help he desired for his roommate, but will the price he’s going to be required to pay be too high? The story line gets pretty interesting as Gideon and Sven begin investigating the truth behind the attack and the rot in their own command.

All in all, this is a first for me and I’m glad I stumbled into it. I’m actually intrigued enough to want to read Sven’s story as well when it comes out.

Grade: B

Summary:

After nearly causing a galactic incident, fleet captain Gideon Arcturus is disgraced, demoted and exiled with nothing to do but pass the time at a seedy club on seedier planet Elora Ki. It’s no place for a straight-laced soldier, but following the rules is what got him there in the first place. When he meets a mesmerizing fire dancer, he’d do anything to get close to the flame.

Tai doesn’t date customers—it’s far too dangerous for a man who was once for sale. But the shy, awkward Gideon entices him, and the two spend Gideon’s leave tangled together, neither knowing the passion that stirs within them won’t soon subside.

When a violent drug lord forces Tai back into slavery, Tai has no choice but to give up his new love. But when Gideon learns that Tai’s fate lies with those who brought about his own ruin, he’ll need to revisit his own difficult past in order to save them both.
