Veena’s review of The Real Thing (Westmorelands, Book 25) by Brenda Jackson
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Desire 4 Mar 14

Adrian Westmoreland offers to help Trinity Mathews get her womanizing boss off her back by pretending to be her boyfriend. While the pretense does nothing to stop the sexual harassment in her workplace, it definitely gets them into each other’s bed. Is this just a good-time affair born of proximity or can it develop into something deeper and more lasting?

Trinity Mathews is finishing her residency in a Denver hospital. One of the senior surgeons on staff is determined to make her a notch on his bedpost, despite all our protests to the contrary. Dr. Casey Belvedere is confident in his family’s wealth and position and has no qualms about using it to buy himself sexual favors with the full support of his peers, as well as hospital administration it appears, when they turn a deaf ear to Trinity’s complaints.

Trinity’s sister Tara appeals to her husband’s cousins in the vicinity and up comes Adrian Westmoreland riding to the rescue. Pretty soon the pretend dates become more serious and they’re both scratching each other’s itch pretty furiously. Adrian holds a reputation for having sown his wild oats and his younger self would have attacked the problem with his fists, but his older more mature self tries to work within the system.

I’ve read some of the Westmoreland stories and, like all family stories, some are better than others. I enjoyed this one because I really like seeing Casey Westmoreland get his comeuppance in more ways than one. It’s also refreshing to see Trinity gaining the confidence to take the right steps in handling a predator like her boss, regardless of the possible personal cost. I am intrigued with the four cousins Bane, Bailey, and Aidan and would like to see them get their own stories.

Grade: B
