Veena’s review of Gambling with the Crown (Heirs to the Throne of Kyr, Book 1) by Lynne Raye Harris
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Presents 01 May 14

This story is vintage Harlequin. Kadir Al Hassan is heir to the oil-rich desert kingdom of Kyr, but while his father rules he enjoys his playboy life where he works hard and plays harder. Emily is his personal assistant who keeps his life running smoothly from behind the scenes until the day she gets catapulted from invisibility to center stage as Kadir’s most unsuitable wife.

Kadir is the younger son and definitely does not want to rule his country after his father is gone. When he hears his father is on his death bed, he decides that an unsuitable wife will take him out of the running and decides that Emily will fit the bill perfectly. Gosh! That arrogance makes me so mad, but hats off to Emily, who, despite having loved Kadir in secret, stands up for herself and draws a line around what she’s willing to do for him.

Of course, now that he’s spent a fortune in turning out Emily as his wife, he’s able to see the beauty hidden beneath the PA and wants to exercise his lust for the beauty. She’s his wife after all. Again, Emily stands up for herself and puts him in his place. But proximity and the change in relationship will have its way and Kadir comes to his senses almost too late to keep Emily in his life.

Woven into the story are threads of Kadir’s past and how they’ve shaped him and similarly Emily’s past and how its shaped her into the person she is. Of course, we get to meet Kadir’s brother Rashid, who’s up next as the other heir to the throne.

Grade: C
