Veena’s review of Take Over at Midnight (Night Stalkers, Book 7)by M.L. Buchman
Military Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 03 Dec 2013

The Night stalkers are a close-knit crew, so they all get to play important roles as secondary characters in this story. Its a bonus to catch up with all of them, but the star attraction is newcomer Lola La Rue, who is joining the team as co-pilot to Emily Beale. From the get-go, as she’s picked up and greeted by a welcoming smile and and battle humor from the gunner Tim Maloney and plunged right into action on her way from the pick-up point, you know this is going to be a book with the right mix of adrenaline and softer emotions that keeps you coming back to this author and this series.

Lola’s softer emotions are immediately engaged by the welcome she gets from Tim. This, coupled with the fact that most of the crew is already in committed relationships, just creates more opportunities for them to spend time together, fueling the chemistry between them into a full-fledged fire.

It’s not quiet on the mission side either. On a routine mission – if any of their missions can be called that – they find evidence of a plot directly threatening the United States, and off they go, winging back stateside to find and neutralize the threat.

Lola, who ran away from home at fourteen, daughter of a crooked cop, and brought up in a brothel, is a self-made person. She has crawled out of the gutter and now flies high as the fourth woman officer and the second woman pilot to join a SOAR unit. Tim, on the other hand, comes from a close-knit family who all love each other and love Tim dearly. The contrast between their families is a huge gulf – can they bridge that to create a long-lasting relationship beyond the physical? You’ll travel that road with them and cheer for and cry with them along the way.

What I truly enjoy about this series is the emotional connect. From the first book, which featured Emily and Mark, and the subsequent books, the characters come alive as real live people and make you, the reader, care about their joys and sorrows so you celebrate or cry right along with them. Tim brings his family background with him when he sets up the special picnic with the teapot that’s been in his family for generations and Lola, who’s never really had a family, finds one with the Night Stalkers.

There is enough action in this book to get an adrenaline rush, but I feel this book, more than the others, brings to life the emotional rush, the aching loss, the beautiful love, and the wonderful friendships. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope you all will too.
