Book CoverSandy M’s review of Turn and Burn (Blacktop Cowboys, Book 5) by Lorelei James
Contemporary Western Erotic Romance published by NAL Trade 6 Aug 13

As much as I love the familial aspect of Lorelei James’ books (the erotic goes without saying), I also really love her sense of humor. The beginning of this book is a hoot. A barrel racer heroine down on her luck and not knowing what her next step should be has a very unique way of having men flock to her so they buy her drinks and then skedaddle as fast as they can.

Tanna Barker is a three-time barrel race champion, so should be living a bit of the high life. But it’s been months since the accident during a race that put her on the side lines and she still hasn’t gotten on a horse again. Then her mother passes away, her father sells the family ranch and takes off to do his own thing, leaving Tanna without a home to go to anymore. Hoping for a summer job in Muddy Gap to get her through for the time being, Tanna doesn’t want her friends to know how serious her situation truly is.

August Fletcher, Fletch to his friends, is the local large-animal vet, and he’s immediately amused by and taken with the woman he spies pulling the wool over so many men’s eyes. Stepping up to the plate himself, he’s thoroughly satisfied when she agrees to have a drink with him. Then spend the night with him. When he awakens the next morning, however, she’s gone and he didn’t get her name because they agreed to a one-night stand only. Never expecting to see the most intriguing woman he’s never met again, Fletch goes back to the everyday grind of work, work, work.

But Fletch and Tanna come face to face again the next day, and the sparks fly just as high and just as hot. Fletch is determined to keep her around this time, and Tanna is still skittish in more ways than one. She can only hold out for so long before giving in to that sexy cowboy who makes her light up every which way with a look or a touch, let alone making love to her, which she remembers quite vividly. In the usual sensual, sexual, and erotic Lorelei James way, these two completely combust when they’re together. And then some. Tanna is impatient and wants the lovin’ hard and fast. Fletch is more laid back and enjoys the anticipation when he loves her tantalizingly slow. The reader loves it all, no matter which way it goes.

Tanna tries to work on her fear of being on a horse and competing again, but she’s finding it more difficult than she’d imagined. Fletch wants to be there for her, but for some reason she chooses not to let that happen. As the summer winds down, it seems they’re going in two different directions – away from each other. Even after baring their souls to one another, opposing future planning only gives them more reason to doubt they’ll have a lifetime together.

As usual, these are lovable, sympathetic characters who triumph and love with everything in them. They’re honorable and loyal, family and friends alike. Fun is part of everyday life and bumps in the road are successfully navigated working together. I’ve enjoyed every character written by Lorelei James. I know she’ll always give me her best and I will enjoy every page, no matter what her characters go through. That’s why I pick up every book with her name on the cover.
