Book CoverVeena’s review of A Spy to Die For (Assassins Guild) by Kris De Lake
Futuristic Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 01 Jul 13

I have a fascination for stories set in futuristic worlds and space travel. So I grab any books that I can find in this genre, particularly since good futuristic romances are hard to find. This particular book combines the excitement of a spy thriller along with the futuristic elements in a very Star Trek kind of way. It reminds me of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith  in a “galaxy far, far away”.

Jack and Skye meet by chance at a seedy hamburger joint on a grimy space station. The attraction is mutual and instantaneous, and they quickly adjourn to find a suitable location to get horizontal and scratch the itch. Unfortunately, it’s more than an itch and now bad guys are after him and she’s going to his rescue. Oh and, yes, they’re both spies, though they work for rival organizations.

As they hopscotch through space, chased by the baddies and try to identify who’s out to kill Jack and why, they find that they actually have a lot in common. Both Jack and Skye have abandonment issues that caused them to end up with Assassin Guilds, where they were trained in defensive skills but leaned toward and excelled at information gathering and spy craft. As they try to outrace their enemies and save their world, they explore each other.

The story is a stand-alone. I did not even realize that this book is a second book in a series until I finished this book and did not miss not having read the first at all. It’s a piece of light reading. Great to take with you on vacation. If you enjoy the genre, then definitely read this one.
