Contemporary Romance by Harlequin Romantic Suspense 7 May 13

This a good story line, but it has a lot left unfinished. I feel it could have been a really enjoyable read, but I kept waiting for more. I see a lot of promise in Ms. Whiddon’s writing, however, and will read her again.

Skylar is a widow. Her son and husband were murdered. She throws herself into her work. At this time she is undercover as a photographer for a horse magazine. Her goal is to locate a large stash of ammunition and prove that Matt is selling to the Mexican cartel. From first glance, Matt and Skylar feel a strong chemistry between them, which eventually keeps getting in the way of the job.

Matt lost his family to the drug cartel and he is out for revenge. Just when he is about to start an all-out war between the different cartels, the ATF steps in to mess everything up. He has gone to a lot of trouble to hide his identity and his money. His childhood friend is the only person he trusts, but as the story develops his faith in his friend is questioned.

The story line in itself is good. Or could be. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the story. I would like to know how to squeal tires on a gravel road.  I find the thought patterns of the characters redundant. I feel sorry for the poor little dog that got locked up in a camper for hours at a time. He would have been better off left at a sitter’s while Skylar worked.

The story never answers the question of how Skylar got shut up in the old cellar. What involvement did Jose have with the criminals? He’s out riding Satin shortly after he is burned. I don’t feel the heroine is a very good undercover agent. And how do they know she’s an agent anyway? Who is the leak in the ATF?

With all the unanswered questions, this book gets a C.
