Book CoverVeena’s review of The Hunter (Highland Guard, Book 7) by Monica McCarty
Historical Romance published by Ballantine Books 25 Jun 13

Author Monica McCarty continues the daring exploits of Robert the Bruce’s elite Highland Guard with the story of Ewen “Hunter” Lamont, the man responsible for making them appear and disappear like ghosts. He joined the Highland Guard determined to restore his clan’s honor lost through his father’s actions. So when he is attracted to a nun, he fights with all he has to hold his lust in check, only to find that she is no ordinary nun. She is Janet Of Mar, daughter of one of the premier earls of the land, sister-in-law to the king himself, and spy extraordinaire dedicated to the service of Robert the Bruce. Has he just landed himself from the pan straight into the fire?

When her daring plan to rescue her sister and nephew from the clutches of the English king failed, Janet of Mar disappeared, presumed dead. She reincarnates herself in the guise of a nun, committed to Bruce’s cause at the cost of her own life. Poor Hunter gets the brunt of her anger and disgust when he tries to keep her safe, believing that being a spy in war time is not women’s work. However, she has been exposed and her life is in danger. Select members of the Highland Guard are dispatched to rescue her, but they are betrayed and chased by English soldiers all over the borders and barely escape with their lives.

Janet is so determined to get the information from a source that she has been cultivating that she escapes from Hunter and puts herself back into danger. Will this be one time too many and will she be able to escape with her life and the critical information necessary to keep the Bruce safe? Are Janet and Hunter destined to find their happily ever after? I think Hunter’s solution is ingenious.

Another winner for Monica McCarty. I love this series and it is interesting to see these large, battle-scarred men falling in love and becoming putty in their wives’ hands. Can’t wait for the next one.

Grade: B

Summary:

The war for Scotland’s freedom continues, as King Robert the Bruce battles on. At his command is an elite army of trained warriors, soldiers dedicated to their king, country—and the remarkable women they love.

Prized for his unbeatable tracking skills, Ewen “Hunter” Lamont accepts a dangerous assignment: locate a missing undercover courier. But this is no ordinary target. Ewen has met her before as “Sister Genna,” a fiery, forbidden woman who was forever etched in his memory after one stolen, sinful kiss. Now that he knows her real identity, he’s more determined than ever to keep her safe. But without the protection of the veil between them, fighting the allure of the beautiful lass may be the toughest battle this extraordinary warrior has ever faced.

After her ill-fated attempt three years ago to rescue her twin sister, Janet of Mar finds salvation acting as a courier for her king—until she surrenders to a darkly handsome, hard-edged warrior whose rough, sensual kisses stir feelings the woman in her can’t deny. But when betrayal leads to danger, and a crucial message is put in jeopardy, Janet has no choice but to put her faith in the hunter who can find anything—perhaps even her heart.
