Book CoverVeena’s review of Hunter by Jacquelyn Frank writing as JAX
Paranormal Romance published by eKensington 02 May 13

Dressed to the nines in preparation for her company’s annual holiday party, Tatyana decides to make a detour to visit her twin brother Dimitre, who’s been evasive of late. This quick stopover turns into something from a horror story as her car breaks down on an isolated road with no cell service. Forced to abandon her car, she hikes in her high heels and beautiful dress toward the lights that she sees in the distance, only to land slap bang the middle of a battle between the white witches of Willow Glen and a coven of dark sorcerers.
If that’s not enough, she’s a latent witch and it’s critical that her powers be released and bound to the white side, otherwise she’ll lose her goodness. So in the midst of the battlefield in a blaze of glory, Tatyana finds her witchy side released, assisted by Hunter, who appears to be sex on wheels.

It turns out that her brother Dimitre is also a witch and so is Annalisa, the new love of his life to whom he is bound. Not quite ready to come clean with all that is going on with him, he’s been evasive; hence Tatyana’s decision to beard him in his den.

Hunter used to be a powerful member of the coven. He is like the battle strategist fighting against black magic at the side of Ryce, the leader of the coven. Incidents in his past, which are explored, where he was not able to keep his family safe caused him to leave the coven and wander in a self-imposed exile as he honed his powers and learned other forms of magic. Now he’s back to help Ryce deal with the new threat that is surrounding the coven and seems to be isolating and attacking their witches, just in time to join in the fight and fall in love with Tatyana.

I think the author does a great job with painting the details and creating the characters of the various members of the coven and describing their powers. It turns out that Tatyana has always had premonitions and clairvoyance but never subscribed them to anything more than instinct. She’s a kick-ass witch, and teamed with Hunter and Ryce they decide to take the offensive right to the door of the sorcerers.

I find this book fast paced, the romance excellent, the characters well developed, and the story sucked me in. I would love to see this developed further into a series.

Grade: B
