Veena’s review of Against the Odds (Raines of Wind Canyon, Book 7) by Kat Martin
Contemporary Romance published by MIRA 18 Sep 12

We first met PI Alex Justice in Against the Sun when Jake Cantrell brings him in to help protect his lady love and client, Sage Drumont. Sabrina Echhart is Sage’s best friend, and from their first meeting there is electricity between the two, but Sabrina is in a live-in relationship and nothing comes of any sparks. The situation has changed. Sabrina has broken up with her boyfriend and her once healthy financial portfolio is decimated. Her uncle’s will is like a silver lining in cloudy skies when he leaves her his sole heir to holdings where he was prospecting for silver. Needing a professional escort Sabrina reaches out to Alex for help.

Pretty soon it is apparent that pretty Sabrina is in over her head. A series of accidents make Alex suspicious there may be more than mere coincidence at work. He takes over the role of protector and moves in with Sabrina in a secure location, ostensibly to keep her safe but also use this opportunity to explore the lust that is raging between them.

However, all good things must come to an end, or so it seems. Sabrina wants a long-term commitment and is ready for marriage and children, etc., but Alex is not sure that he’s a one-woman-commitment man. He’s sort of a pretty dog in the manger-ish kind of guy, not ready to give up Sabrina but also not ready to commit. Sounds awfully like a lot of young people out there today. Anyhow, Sabrina takes matters into her own hands and decides to move in.

I am not sure why the author continues to call this series the Raines of Wind Canyon, because while the first three books were about the Raines, there have been no Raines nor Wind Canyon featured in the last few books. I did have the opportunity to ask the author about this fact at the RWA last Summer in Anaheim, and she sorta agreed that it’s just stuck with the books. However, these are fine action adventure romances and I’ve enjoyed every one of them. The author gives us an opportunity to catch up with some of the characters from the earlier stories from time to time and, of course, we’re all set up for the next one. Can’t wait.

Grade: B

Summary:

His case may prove to be too hot to handle …

There’s silver out there: Sabrina Eckhart is sure of it. And when she finds the hidden mine on that big piece of West Texas desert, all of her financial problems are solved. That is, if she can find it. The man with the skills she needs is private investigator Alex Justice—a former navy fighter pilot and a current pain in the neck.

When mysterious “accidents” start to plague their search, it seems Rina’s multi-acre inheritance might be more of a curse than a blessing. And yet, there’s still something sensual about the heat…his arrogance…her stubbornness…being thrust into each other’s arms by danger…But the vultures are circling, and if they don’t watch their backs, the relentless desert sun could be the last thing they ever see.
