Book CoverAsh’s review of Last Kiss Goodnight (Otherworld Assassins, Book 1) by Gena Showalter
Paranormal Romance published by Pocket Books 26 Dec 12

Gena Showalter is one of my favorite authors. There has not been a book of hers that I haven’t enjoyed. As soon as I read the blurb on Last Kiss Goodnight, I had to have it. I just wish it had lived up to her other books more.

I have to start by saying that I am not sure if Gena Showalter is purposely writing in a new style or that is just how this book went. I went into it expecting her usual stuff and this is not it at all. I am trying not to let that affect my feelings toward the story, because it is a good story. Someone new to Showalter might enjoy this more than an established fan like me.

As for the world, I was fully immersed in it, and while it is familiar to me from her other Otherworld series, it feels completely fresh. I love books that have this kind of feel to them, and if it wasn’t so slowly paced it would have been an A grade. The action is almost nonexistent. Every time I think something can happen, it doesn’t, or at least not to its full potential. The same goes for the love scenes, which, if you have read Gena Showalter before, you know she knows how to write them. Again, they went nowhere and I’m left wanting more of everything.

I still read this book as fast as I could, and I will still read every book Gena Showalter puts out there, but I’m left feeling like this could have been really awesome instead of just really good. It feels a little bit like a wasted opportunity, and it really sucks saying that about a favorite author.
