Book CoverAsh’s review of Poison Princess (Arcana Chronicles book 1) by Kresley Cole
Young Adult published by Simon and Schuster 2 Oct 12

Kresley Cole decides to try her hand at young adult, and she has definitely succeeded, in my opinion. I couldn’t put Poison Princess down until the last page was read.

The story starts off in a very haunting way and it sucks you in.  It’s after an apocalypse referred to as the “Flash’ when we first meet our heroine, Evie. She has been caught in the trap of a psychopath and she begins to tell her story of how she got there. The book does change tone and we go back in time to before the Flash when life was normal for everyone but Evie. It does feel like it is another book completely, and while I still wonder about Evie’s present circumstances, I was completely into the storyline. I don’t usually like flashbacks, but this isn’t a typical flashback. It all blends together smoothly and I was never taken out of it. I need a book to grab me  in the first few pages, and while some people might not like the way that Kresley Cole has done that, I love it.

As for Evie and Jack, I love them both. I think all books would be better if they had a Jack Deveaux in them. Kresley Cole does bad boy heroes so very, very well. I feel like there is still so much more we can learn about both of these characters, especially with the way the story ends. It is somewhat of cliff hanger, or maybe more of a ‘to be continued’ and I finished it wishing the next one is out right this minute! Anyone, young or old, looking for something different in paranormal should look here.

Summary:

The characters on Tarot cards are real.

The Huntress, the Fool, Death, the Lovers . . . and eighteen other Major Arcana all exist. These warriors, femme fatales, magicians, and devils each have uniquely lethal powers.

And they’re coming for me.

To survive, I’ll have to embrace my own terrifying abilities—and team up with dangerously handsome Jack Deveaux, one of the few people I know that also survived the Flash. But if Jack ever beholds what I truly am, will he abandon me to my fate . . . ?
