Veena’s review of Wed to a Highland Warrior (Warrior King, Book 4) by Donna Fletcher
Historical Romance published by Avon 30 Oct 12

I don’t know about all you readers out there, but hats off to this author for maintaining the suspense of which brother is the king. I personally could not tell until the very end when the mystery is revealed. Interestingly, the brothers always knew, but none of them had shared the truth with their wives until the end. I do want to warn you, however, that this book is chockful of secrets that I never anticipated before. What a great ending to a fabulous series, though, take heart, I saw on the author’s website that she’s not quite ready to say goodbye to Duncan, Reeve, Bryce, and Trey. So hopefully we’ll get to visit with them again.
Bliss is stopped by the king’s soldiers, but her instincts tell her to wait for someone’s arrival. Well, that someone happens to be Trey and she declares him her husband in front of witnesses and he acknowledges the relationship, and so they’re married. This is a Pict marriage ritual and is the source of all the historicals with eloping couples going across the Scottish border, predominantly to Gretna Green, to tie the knot. They had both met before when Bliss had healed Trey of his grievous injuries, but this is their chance to really get to know each other.

Trey is on a reconnoitering mission for the MacAlpins and Bliss is on her way to heal a family in need of her help. As they wander across Scotland together rescuing people, healing people, fighting the king’s soldiers, they get to know each other and bond at a very deep, elemental level. Since Bliss is a seer and a healer, she is used to people keeping their distance from her. For the first time she finds total acceptance in Trey. Trey, of course, has been hurt when he lost the love of his life, Leora, and felt he couldn’t ever love again. He finds Bliss is slowly but surely breaching the barriers of his heart.

As I reflect on the story, it seems to be all about the two of them walking from place to place and having adventures practically every other night, and yet when you think more deeply, then the cameos come alive, Trey carrying Bliss up a tree to hide her, the poor mother laboring to have her baby all alone with her son when Bliss shows up to help her, the little boy who is hit in the head and wandering in a daze until Bliss comes to rescue him. What a wonderful kaleidoscope of the times the author has created in this story. I can feel the Scottish hills come alive. I booed the king’s soldiers at the way they treated the common people and, of course, like everyone else, couldn’t wait for the true king to set everything to rights.

Of course, they make their way back to the MacAlpin keep and we get to visit with all the other couples and see the progress in their lives and stories since the last book. Safety is but an illusion, but the true king reveals himself and comes to the rescue when they are betrayed by one of their own. I enjoyed the entire series and I would be hard pressed to say which book I like the best; however, this one makes a very fitting end, and, like the other couples, Trey and Bliss are perfect together.

Grade: A
