Dinca’s review of Shot Through the Heart by D’Ann Lindun
Romantic Suspense published by Crimson Romance 20 Aug 12

This book is cram packed with characters you will love and those you will love to hate. It is full of spellbinding suspense from the very first sentence to the last page. I will be looking for more from D’Ann Lindun.

Laramie Porter is the best friend of her sister–in-law, Julie. When she gets a call from the hospital that Julie needs her, she comes running. When there are drugs and domestic violence involved, no one comes out unscathed. Some even lose their lives. As the only witness to her brother’s violence and drug addiction, she tries to get him to turn himself in and get the help that he needs before it is to late. When Laramie calls 911 for help, they tell her everything will turn out fine because her brother, the sheriff, is there with her. The only thing nearly worse than having a violent drug addict in the family is his being the town sheriff.

Derrick Garrison just wants to round up his cattle and get home. It’s the only thing he has going after being duped by his ex-wife. Without the cattle he will lose his ranch. Finding a dead body in the mud and rescuing a crazy woman trying to kill herself by jumping off a cliff is not on the agenda. Being attracted to and getting involved with the woman’s problems is so not on his list of things to do.

Sometimes you just can’t help yourself. Such is the case with this story line. I just could not help myself. I simply love the characters, the way the story plays out, and the villain is so believable I want to lock him up myself. I did not put this hundred-page story down from the moment I picked it up. I would have been very content if the author extended the story line a few more chapters. All in all, I do believe I’ve found a new favorite author in D’Ann Lindun.

Summary:

When Laramie Porter’s sister-in-law Julie is beaten so badly by her husband she miscarries her baby, Laramie takes her home from the hospital. But just a few minutes after the women arrive home, Julie’s husband, who also happens to be a drug addict and the local police sheriff, shows up at the house on a murderous rampage. He kills Julie and attempts to murder Laramie. When he doesn’t succeed, he hauls them into the mountains and throws them off a cliff. Julie’s body lands in a pond, but Laramie hits a ledge, where she perches, terrified.

Derrick Garrison is in the mountains moving his cattle when his dog finds Julie’s body in the pond. Creeped out, Derrick at first doesn’t believe his ears when he hears a girl crying for help. But he finds Laramie and pulls her to safety. Before she can tell him anything, a lightning strike starts a forest fire and they flee to a hidden valley.

Fleeing a drug hazed killer, the fire, and a gun-toting old lady bent on collecting a reward, Laramie and Derrick do their best to evade all three . . . and fall in love along the way.
