Book Cover Ash’s review of Primal Law (Alpha Pack, Book 1) by J.D. Tyler
Paranormal Romance published by Signet Eclipse 02 Aug 11

I didn’t hate Primal Law. I didn’t love it either, but it has potential. It’s a book that I can curl up in bed with and enjoy without thinking too hard. Some parts of it made me roll my eyes or even cringe in disgust, but overall I had a good time reading it.

I do have to say I kind of love Jax as a hero (aside from one thing he does, which I will get to in a minute). He isn’t the typical over-the-top alpha military hero. To me he is a pretty realistic guy, especially with his responses to life and to Kira. He isn’t brooding, when he has more than one reason to be considering his past. He is what stands out to me in Primal Law, without him I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much. I just wish he has a better heroine. Kira is just annoying to me. She is the opposite of Jax, in that her reactions seem to be either not enough or too much. The more I read, the less I like her.

Jax does have a few moments where he acts like the usual jerk alpha hero. The worst is when he pulls the ‘I will sleep with another woman to prove I don’t really need this woman’ thing. I had to really roll my eyes here. He doesn’t go all the way with this other woman, but it goes far enough. I think this is the point I just gave up on Kira. She can smell this other woman’s perfume, but Kira doesn’t even make Jax wash his hands before she jumps into bed with him. This isn’t something I want to read in a romance, but it’s the only time that I have an issue with Jax, so I’m able to overlook it. Personally I would have made him shower, but I guess Kira is less picky.

There are, of course, plenty of other men just waiting to be heroes, and I am actually looking forward to each of them. While it doesn’t have the most unique plot among paranormal romances, I enjoyed it and I am interested in how the storyline is going to play out. The mix of the usual suspects (witches, shifters, psy abilities) with the less usual (faeries, gremlins, and unknowns) keeps it interesting and it’s a world I want to revisit.
