Book CoverAsh’s review of The Demon in Me (Living in Eden Series, Book 1) by Michelle Rowen
Paranormal Romance published by Berkley 04 May 10

I never paid this series much attention, thinking I wouldn’t like it, but it turns out I was completely wrong.

I’ve read one or two books by Michelle Rowen before, and they were good but they just didn’t have the oomph I was looking for. I probably wouldn’t have picked up The Demon in Me if it wasn’t sent to me to review, and that would have been very sad for me. I’m not sure I would consider this paranormal romance, but it’s not really urban fantasy either. It is the perfect book for snuggling up in bed and doing nothing but reading and relaxing.

Eden is a likable character, and she is practically fumbling in the dark when it comes to magic stuff. While at times she slips into the TSTL category, her personality is what saves her. Michelle Rowen does a good job at keeping Eden in the right place. She has moments where she could have easily become an airhead or the man hater, but she never goes over the edge. She does, however, become one of those heroines who ends up being more than what she seems, and it’s almost expected now. A human in a paranormal world almost always ends up as something more.

Darrak is the demon living literally in Eden, and he is my favorite part of the book. Years of possessing humans has curbed his evil impulses and he is not quite the big bad he use to be. I am all for a reformed bad boy and Darrak is definitely that. The relationship between him and Eden changes along the way, but I don’t think it’s enough to label this a paranormal romance. People might be expecting something different, but this isn’t the end for them, and I am ready to start the next book.

While not the strongest book I’ve read story-wise, I’m glad I didn’t miss out on it. I’d like to see what else is in store for us, and going by the last chapter it looks like there is lots more to come. Paranormal fans, romance  or not, should read this one for sure.

Summary:

Hell hath no fury…

Fate has led Eden Riley to become a “psychic consultant” to the police, even though her abilities are unreliable at best. Those paranormal powers are about to get her into a jam she couldn’t have predicted. After her hunky police detective partner guns down a serial killer in front of her, Eden realizes that she’s quite literally no longer alone. A voice in her head introduces himself as Darrak. He’s a demon. But not in a bad way!

…like a woman possessed.

Darrak lost his original body 300 years ago thanks to a witch’s curse. This is the first time he’s ever been able to speak directly to a host, plus there’s a bonus. Eden’s psychic energy helps him to take form during daylight hours. He wants to use this chance to find a way to break his curse — finally. Otherwise, Eden’s going to have to learn to live with this sexy demon…like it or not.

And she thinks she might like it.
