Book CoverAsh’s review of As Lie the Dead (Dreg City Series Book 2) by Kelly Meding
Urban Fantasy released by Dell 27 JUL 2010

Kelly Meding continues to make me a happy reader, and once again I couldn’t put her book down until I finished it.

The one thing I was really hoping to happen in As Lie the Dead is for Evy is grow and figure out who she is now. Considering all she has gone through, and continues to go through, she does a good job of facing her fears about her new life. In this genre I think it’s almost like pulling teeth to get any character to open up and admit their fears, and be ready to face them. The moments between her and Wyatt, where they talk about their pasts and what they want for their future, were some of my favorite scenes. The tenderness between them is  perfect compared to the ugliness and sadness of the rest of the book. Kelly Meding handles the emotional aspect perfectly.

The new mystery of who the bad guy is, well, a mystery. Once again we don’t know who to trust, and there are more new characters to throw into the mix. Phineas is one of those new ones who becomes important to the story, and I was happy when he was in a scene. If Wyatt was not in the story that Phineas would have my vote for hero material. There is just something about a man with wings…

The violence continues to be almost non stop, with Evy coming very close to dying again. Going into this I was a bit skeptical about it happening right after the events of Three Days to Dead. Even I thought Evy needed a break, but it ended up feeling more like a part two, instead of a second book. The ending seems to be the end of this current battle, and I am excited to see what will happen after the fall out.

Summary:

Evangeline Stone, a rogue bounty hunter, never asked for a world divided between darkness and light . . .

. . . or the power to die and live again in someone else’s borrowed body. After a murder plot meant to take her out leaves an entire race of shapeshifters nearly extinct, Evy is gnawed by guilt. So when one of the few survivors of the slaughter enlists her aid, she feels duty-bound to help—even though protecting a frail, pregnant shifter is the last thing Evy needs, especially with the world going to hell around her.

Amid weres, Halfies, gremlins, vamps—and increasingly outgunned humans—a war for supremacy is brewing. With shifters demanding justice, her superiors desperate to control her, and an assassin on her trail, Evy discovers a horrifying conspiracy. And she may be the only person in the world who can stop it—unless, of course, her own side gets her first.
