Married by Morning By Lisa Kleypas (cover)
Friday, February 5, 2010 2:55Posted in category Review
This is the final copy and stepback of Married by Morning, which I should have posted yesterday. It is much larger below the cut.
What do you think? I like it better than the door but am not sure about how I feel about changing the look of a series in the middle of it.
Leo Hathaway must marry and produce an heir within a year to save his family home. Catherine Marks is intriguing and infernally tempting but hides a secret that could utterly destroy her. Can two wary lovers find a way to banish the shadows and give in to their desires?

The excerpt Lisa posted @ TGTBTU is linked here.

Why is she wearing a bridesmaid’s dress? and why is her hair distinctly 21st century? I can’t even begin to guess the era that this book is supposed to take place. He’s wearing a shirt that opens down the front, so that would date it to mid Victorian or later, but her dress? Anybody’s guess. I know the era because I’ve read some of the books, but please, let’s have something that at least gives us a clue.
To be honest, it’s pretty, but I wouldn’t have picked this up as a historical.

I definitely like the other three covers better with the brightly colored dresses. I don’t care for the roses, but it doesn’t really matter, I’m going to buy it anyway!

I like that fact that they included her glasses in the cover…usually you read that they wear spectacles in the beginning of the book and then you never read it in the rest….expecially in the love scenes…I hope this is not one of them

I also like it better than the door. It’s very pretty. It does seem a little strange to change the look mid way through. However, to just have another woman in a diffrent color dress would have been kind of boring.

Eh. I like the inside page of the two of them (I know there’s probably a technical term for that), even though generally, the characters never look the way I picture them in my mind
It is awesome that they included her spectacles.
But the actual cover? It’s okay, but why couldn’t they have continued the girl-in-the-dress thing? This is more like one of the floral covers from the late eighties/early nineties. No matter, I’m still rabidly obsessed with this book.

LOLOLOLOL Lynne! Most readers (I tend to think of readers as ‘internet readers vs ‘everyday nonplugged in ones’ which is TOTALLY a me thing I think but I t hink the later is a higher number but ‘we’ r catching up maybe) would totally not see anything of that. AGAIN I thing. The oh whatev that group is it slips my mind… would totally
.
me – didn’t at all
.
My first reaction was wow really? It is risky and will be a great look into OMG get rid of those BODICE RIPPERS!!!?!?! BUT those Bodice Rippers SELLS! NOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo they Don’t argument. At the same time if it comes out and hits number one for three weeks then people will say, will really it had nothing to do with the cover! It is LISA KLEYPAS! What do you expect?
.
If it hits low, people can blame the cover while others can say, it was just a crappy book. So that leads me back to ACK why screw with a good thing or to so far the other way. The covers were very pretty and it isn’t like this is book number 10.
.
The stepback reminded me of Devil in Winter without the snow. Very Avonish, not sure what they were going for and well leo reminds me of St. Vincents (in someways).
.
By the way Lisa is reading this but I doubt will stop in the comments until later, but feel free to ask for another excerpt *eg* and do be honest about the cover. Sqqquuuueee if you love it, tell what you like or don’t – feel free to be honest – she still talks to me and I always am *G*.

Hmmm. The cover looks uninspired, as if it came from a stock photography website. I’m, of course, going to buy the book, but they might want to rethink the cover. The previous covers are gorgeous. Why not have her in a beautiful dress, wearing her spectacles? Now that would be a fresh look!

Since this is LK, I would buy the books even with brown paper bag covers! I like the new covers, they have a wedding invitation feel and look to them, which is perfect for spring and summer. I didn’t even notice the glasses in Catherine’s hand till you ladies mentioned them! Perfect touch. I can’t wait for May to get here, I’m thinking Leo and Marks will be my favorite couple in the series. Also love Bea’s excerpt too!

Ok; So, I don’t love the covers. I am a big fan of the first three covers….loved them! I was looking forward to seeing Cat in a more provacative dress and Leo with a steamier come hither look (is that spelled correctly?). With all that being said; I would buy her books with any cover. Thank you for glimpse of what we have to look forward to! May can’t get here soon enough! The wait is torture and since I have read everything Lisa has written (repeatedly), search the internet daily for any tidbit or update and am basicly obsessed; I am willing to do a little begging for her to post another excerpt!
Linny says:
February 8th, 2010 at 6:39 am
I was disappointed when I saw the cover for all the reasons mentioned above. I had imagined more than a bunch of white roses and Cat in a plainish white gown…It’s a bit of a shame considering the standard set by the previous 3 covers. However, it won’t matter at all to me as long as the Leo and Cat’s story is as wonderful as we all hoped. Definitely would love for Lisa to provide us with more hints and teasers of what to expect. If only so we can distract ourself silly with the speculation until May/June.
Meg says:
February 8th, 2010 at 9:16 am
Linny, I’m distracting myself silly anyways.
Oh, BTW, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for recommending Kresley Cole. I currently own/have read all the books in her IAD series except for “Playing Easy to Get” and Murdoch/Daniela’s story, but both are in hardback and therefore more expensive, so I’ll bide my time before I buy those. Eagerly awaiting “Pleasure of a Dark Prince.” *fans self*
Anyways, back on topic, I kind of like the uber-chaste look that Leo and Cat are sporting here. Seems like more of a wink-wink nudge-nudge thing to me, because we all know Leo is anything but and Cat will soon follow in his footsteps ;D I wonder how she’s going to work the Cat-must-have-baby-in-a-year angle. Okay, twelve months in a year, nine months of which have to be devoted to gestation, and that leaves the actual courtship/marriage for three months at most. Wow, somebody’s gonna have their work cut out for them, seeing as they’re both acting like they still despise each other…
Ann says:

about cat and leo..
only three months for leo-a lot of hard work for our hero:D:D;))and actually there is no guarantee that they will have son..also I was thinking,if they have spent night together before they got married..because on the cover there is written-”one night can change everything” and I can’t imagine how could cat change her mind about leo and agree to marry him..
Meg says:
February 8th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
Kristie, maybe her dark, scary past is coming back to haunt her and will prompt her to marry Leo for the protection a husband can provide. You’re absolutely right, though, there’s no guarantee that their child will be a boy. And what if she can’t conceive to begin with? Something tells me that this won’t go according to plan…
Linny says:
February 9th, 2010 at 3:26 am
Hey Meg, glad you enjoyed IAD. Anyway, now that you’ve started on paranormals, you must, must, MUST read J.R.Ward’s BDB series. Book 3, Love Awakened is one of favorite romances. “Married by Morning” and J.R.Ward’s “Lover Mine” are equal top of my must reads for 2010. The wait feels so long I try not to think about it…until I come onto this forum! As for the baby quest on a tight deadline with all that sniping and avoiding each other, that had me wondering as well. Can’t say I’m a fan of the chaste look but they are meant to be ‘wary lovers’. However, neither character look any like I imagined (typical) so I won’t be looking too closely at the stepback when I finally get the book. Anyway, I love the concept that Leo has some pressure to marry soon and that list of potential ‘unsuitable’ brides had me laughing. I hope they’re paraded about to annoy him.
Kristie says:
February 9th, 2010 at 5:47 am
can’t think about Leo as of the ‘wary lover’ ,he seems very passionate;)also in the description it is said that “A furious quarrel leads to a passionate kiss that changes everything”-wonder if that is about their kiss in the missing scene after chapter 23rd in TMAT, because based on excerpt that is now on LK website it seems like in their relationships nothing had changed..
Linny says:
February 9th, 2010 at 6:23 am
Kristie, I agree, I’m all for less wary and more passionate. But I guess they’re both wary of their feelings towards each other because of problems in their past. I must be blind as I didn’t notice that description you mentioned about the furious quarrel that lead to a passionate kiss…However, I don’t remember that missing scene quarrel being all that furious and I wasn’t under the impression it was going to be super passionate kiss as it was their first and all…and I also agree, couldn’t have been all that ‘changing if they’re still sniping at each other the way they were at breakfast. I’m hoping it’s referring to another argument that leads to a night of passion when they both can’t help themselves in a moment of insanity.
They live in close proximity with each other so surely it’s bound to happen.
Kristie says:
February 9th, 2010 at 6:53 am
Linny, it is on UK amazon -”Leo, Lord Ramsay, must marry and produce an heir within a year to save his family home. However, the woman he most desires is Catherine Marks, his exasperating and stubborn adversary. A furious quarrel leads to a passionate kiss that changes everything. But before Leo and Catherine can be together, they have to deal with the dangers of Catherine’s mysterious past” -that’s why I was wondering if that ”passionate kiss that changes everything” was in missing scene, so maybe that is another;) but they have to be quick about it because they have only three months:D;))

I am not a great fan of the cover change. I liked the vibrant jewel-box colours the others had, and was hoping we’d get something similar here. I could have gone for (as Karen said above) either Catherine in her spectacles, maybe on a gold-toned cover, or in keeping with the theme of having the siblings on the cover, I could even have gone for Leo so long as it was in keeping with the rest of the series’ design.
The stepback also looks nothing like how I imagined them — but my imagination is working in overdrive where this book is concerned regardless.
Chely says:

I liked the door cover better, it had a mistery around it; but I don’t really care about covers. No matter what, I keep picturing the characters as they were always in my head. I’m very excited for the book. Having to wait until May is a cruel thing to do
I loved the excerpt, we could see that Cat keeps pushing it too, not just Leo’s fault.

I am kindoff disappointed by the cover. Why did lisa not keep with the girl in the dress theme like the other books. If she wanted to make it a Hathaway theme then she should have just put Leo in the front and the a follow up picture inside. The other books gave us a sense of mystery while this shows to much. I would have also liked to see the glasses in the cover rather than inside. And the invitation would have been a nice touch if it was more historical rather than contempory. I like to feel the characters developing from a vague picture rather than being forced fed two models. It takes away the class and exclusivity of the series. However This is Lisa Kleypas and I buy the books to be read not to gaze upon.
Meg says:
February 10th, 2010 at 11:46 am
Linny, the BDB series is definitely on my TBR pile!
I’m also wondering about the “one night can change everything” blurb on the cover. I agree, they probably will get horizontal after a particularly heated argument ;D

SPOILER
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
SPOILER about the quarrel between Cat & Leo. I think but I am not sure it was a spoiler here that Leo is drawing nudes of Cat and she finds them. that could be what the quarrel is about.
Linny says:
February 11th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
Well that would be fun (for us that is) if they were arguing about the nudie pics of Leo’s imagination.
I could do with a spoiler on what Cat is running from. May is way too far. Thanks for the clarification on the description Kristie, it would be interesting to have some hints from LK on this tight deadline. Back to the cover since this is the topic of the forum, I think the pair of glasses, a bed of daffodils (if it had to be flowers) or even Leo’s drawings and his drawing instruments on the front and Cat in a vibrant yellow gown would have been lovely – and maybe Leo could be taller, leaner and less stereotypical victorian hero. But most of all I just wish the book would come to us sooner. Meg, my TBR pile is non-existent these days so I am jealous jealous and horribly bored.
therealexlucas says:
February 11th, 2010 at 10:29 pm
Ann I don’t think that was it…I think it was back from the TMAT excerpt that Lisa explained that the nude drawings wasn’t part of the “big arguement”…I DO HOPE that Leo and Cat do “do it” in the that end of the exlcusive scene (the exclusive excerpt that this website has); it would make sense since the book’s description confessed that Leo does finally desire Cat…can’t wait for May!!
therealexlucas says:
February 11th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Sorry I was wrong…Lisa actually said that the nude drawings wasn’t part of the missing scene from TMAT…so maybe that part could be the ‘big argurment’….yeah, even more kinky!

The cover I’m not so fond of, but if it’s a LK book I will read it. I’ve read all her books and love each and everyone of them. I’m on a countdown, yes it’s only 96 days till MBM comes out, and it is killing me. Leo is a character that deserves a happy ending since he lost his love and was in such grief was so profound in the first book, that if anyone deserves happiness it’s Leo. Don’t get me wrong, Beatrix’s story is just as exciting, but I think it’s Leo and Cat’s story that has reeled everyone in. I did take the Beatrix test and I’m a ferret.

I know…I find it odd that the cover for “Love in the Afternoon” is up, but Leo and Cat’s book, which is due out first, isn’t. Maybe Lisa values our opinions here at TGTBATU so much that she told Amazon not to put up the cover until she gets our feedback on it ;D Seriously, though, does anyone remember how far before the release of the book the Look Inside feature for TMAT became available? Seems like maybe it was a couple of months beforehand…

I personally think that AVON historical romance covers are waaaay better than St.Martin’s. The cover is great here but its… a bit.. modern. And still, I can’t wait for the BOOK! So excited. I always want Cat & Leo to be together. And taa-da, dream came true! I’m still disappointed on the St.Martin’s covers style. What happen to Lisa in Avon? She used to be in Avon but now… I don’t know. Still, cheers! Her book is in printing and yeah, let’s be happy!

Hi ladies, Amazon has finally posted the MBM cover we see here, but still no Look Inside feature….hopefully soon. Jenniez about Lisa and the move from Avon to St Martin’s Press…I think I read somewhere she was wooed away by St Martin’s Press editor with an offer to write contempories and historicals. I love her contemps and historicals and so thrilled we are getting last two Hathaways back to back and a new contemp near Christmas.
Amanda says:
February 24th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
Hello everyone, I am speculating that this whole story of Leo finding a bride and sire a heir in less than or in one year is probably a scheme of the Hathaways involving Cam and Merripen to bring Cat and Leo together. Beatrix has already mentioned in TMAT that Leo and Cat like eachother. And also like some of you already mentioned that whats the guarantee that Cat will concieve right away, haha, and that too will be a son?
Macy says:
February 25th, 2010 at 8:39 am
Ladies, I have found the new description about the book-
For two years, Catherine Marks has been a paid companion to the Hathaway sisters—a pleasant position, with one caveat. Her charges’ older brother, Leo Hathaway, is thoroughly exasperating. Cat can hardly believe that their constant arguing could mask a mutual attraction. But when one quarrel ends in a sudden kiss, Cat is shocked at her powerful response—and even more so when Leo proposes a dangerous liaison.
Linny says:
February 25th, 2010 at 3:31 pm
“dangerous liaison”….hmmm, what could be so dangerous??? I’m still betting that the quarrel is not the garden scene.
Meg says:
February 26th, 2010 at 8:30 am
Amanda, that’s probably very likely. I like the way you think! The Hathaways have to have noticed the unresolved sexual tension by now…
Jenniez says:

Thank you Carol for letting me know what’s up with her moving to St.Martin Press. I found out there is another cover for this book? The one with the door knob or something? Will that be coming out? Or just a sample? Or a fraud? Gosh, its really confusing :S
bijoux says:

@ Linny: I think the ‘dangerous liason’ is actually the marriage and heir siring.

Hi Jenniez, About the second book over it was posted at the Canadian book store Chapters http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/search?keywords=lisa%20kleypas&pageSize=10&sort=ReleaseDate&sortDirection=true&page=0 I think Sybil confirmed that this cover is not the “oifficial” cover but maybe at one point it was a possiblity before the final version was decided on. If you click on the link it will show the door knob cover, but when you click on the cover it will bring up the NEW cover…very weird.
Meg says:
February 27th, 2010 at 10:29 am
To add to what Macy posted, Amazon has also edited the second paragraph of the description:
“Leo must marry and produce an heir within a year to save his family home. Catherine’s respectable demeanor hides a secret that would utterly destroy her. But to Leo, Cat is intriguing and infernally tempting, even to a man resolved never to love again. The danger Cat tried to outrun is about to separate them forever—unless two wary lovers can find a way to banish the shadows and give in to their desires…”
Only three months until we find out what that danger is…*gnaws on knuckles*
