I read this one and my feelings were much the same as yours. Yes, the paranormal stuff was just daft, a deus ex machina thing, but the inner story, especially the character of Marco, was lovely.
Except for one thing. The Formula One thing. These days Formula One drivers are, without exception, short. I think the limit is around five foot seven. That's because the cars need to be light and streamlined and a big man just wouldn't fit. Look at the current World Champion, Jenson Button, or his predecessor, Lewis Hamilton, or even the great Michael Schumaker. They live glamorous lives, live in Monte Carlo and places like that, but they are slightly built (very strong, but their workouts are a bit different) and short. In this story Marco is described as a six footer. No freaking way, not in the modern sport. I think the last tall Formula One champion was in the sixties.

Only in romance novels are feuding racing families under a curse. I kind of like the idea of a magical baby cure - it combines magical vagina with magical sperm for a super remedy! (That is how sex works, right?)
