Book CoverLynne Connolly‘s review of Getting Physical by Jade Lee
Contemporary romance released by Harlequin Blaze 1 Sep 09

Tantric sex – Jade Lee seems to know her stuff. This book had strong, believable characters and an unusual setup.

Stephen, a Chinese businessman, has come all the way to America to meet a tigress, a partner for Tantric sex. Together, they’ll enter heaven, using sex as a tool. Only his allocated partner has fallen in love – a tragic fate for a tigress, Stephen thinks, and she’s no longer interested. But Stephen finds another tigress in Zoe. He recognizes her fast and soon proposes that she practices with him.

Nice practice if you can get it.

Zoe has had some training in Tantric sex, but she’s working hard for her MBA and has plans that don’t include heaven. She’s willing to practice with Stephen, a hot Chinese male, and help him, but she finds herself falling deeper every time they meet.

This is a good Blaze, with lots of hot scenes and a definite progression in the romance, from “practice” to love. Problems are internal and external, with Stephen unwilling to give in to his feelings for Zoe, and Zoe unsure where she fits in his life, if anywhere.

There is a steaming hot phone sex scene partway through the book, with some Tantric touching – I wish! And Stephen is more than a standard alpha. He’s wealthy, but his business isn’t one you usually meet in an HMB book and he has doubts about himself, about his business, about what he’s doing. But he is a strong man with a Chinese outlook on life, and I loved that.

Zoe is an interesting character, too, but a few things about her bothered me. She accepts Stephen’s dictates a mite too easily for my liking, although she’s nicely resilient at first. I loved her visit to China, but something about her didn’t gel for me. Maybe her past was too lightly drawn, so I didn’t get a feel for her.

At the end I felt a bit sad, because Stephen, despite his high aspirations, seemed to settle for something he didn’t want at the beginning of the book. I was sorry he didn’t achieve heaven the way he wanted to.

And the cover. I can’t be the only person disappointed not to see a hot Asian male on the cover. I love me a bit of Jet Li and his brethren, so how about it, Harlequin?

I loved Zoe’s visit to China and one thing about the book made me very happy, although it’s a tiny bit of a spoiler, so here goes: SPOILER WARNING. At the end of the book, when Stephen and Zoe commit, she says she wants to finish her MBA, and Stephen agrees, seems surprised that she should think that he wanted her to give it up. Yay!

B+ from me. Nice one, Jade.
