I'm appreciating all this education. I'm also wondering how it is that I think one of the coolest movies of all time is 'Once Upon a Time in the West', but I haven't translated that to reading Westersn.

I enjoyed reading your interviews and they reminded me of some great westerns I've read. Cheryl St. John is one of my favorite western authors although there is a long list of great western authors out there right now.

Sharon Ihle is a cute lighter writer.

And I am horrid at 'categories' which is why we have something like 500000000 tags here I need to trim. But really I think of 'western' as anything 'frontier' hell if still want to rec a few aussie tale LOL.

But haven't even finished my Harlequin post. Le sigh half the fault of my head and half the fault of my books being all over the frapp'n place. It annoys me cuz I know I am missing someone on my list but such is life.

Kristin Hannah is someone eles (not a Harlequin author) I think When Lightning Strkes and If you Believe are her two really good westernish titles *g* think. She write fiction/women's fiction now but once upon a time... le sigh

Georganna: Another book that I had forgotten about was Dear Penelope by Sharon Ihle. Kristie is giving away a copy on her blog :)

http://kristiej.blogspot.com/2009/08/great-western-drive-final-day.html

It's a cute, lighter story - so if you lean that way, that may be one to check out.

Kristie: Yeah, I guess technically Ride The Fire is a colonial, but for me it has some of the ear-marks of a good western. It's really got that fantastic "frontier" quality to it - which I really enjoy.

Georganna: Ride the Fire is a WONDERFUL book and I hope you love it! I don't really consider it a Western - but that's me and we all have our own definition of what makes a Western a Western. I've broken a lot of my list down a bit further so I put it in the Colonial category - but I still DO SO URGE you to read it!!

There was one book I started and right way the characters were using 'darn tootin' 'shore enuff' and all the worst colloquilisms you can imagine. Gave me a headache it did.

Oh good! Dawson was the first one to come to my mind and Wendy's. I don't know if you visit All About Romance but if I recall correctly they have a few reviews over there. I want to say I bought the first few from a few great reviews there.

Although I still haven't read the book with the pig...

From what you said I think her style would fix with you and should be easy to find. And if you like her RS that is perfect!

I soooooo can't wait to hear what you think of RtF, even if you hate it. Do come tell us. PC is a great author (also does RS if you like those and I think you would really enjoy her current series - Unlawful Contact was the last book). I

should be more info there than you want to know about her current historicals and RS series

I will try "Ride the Fire" since I requested it from my library. But I will look for some Dawson books too, because I do love her comtemps about the 4 brothers (unfortunately, I'm blanking on the titles of those). If all goes well, I'll look for some SKLaw books too.
Thanks so much Sybil!!!!!

Oh uh I was looking at my Geralyn Dawson books, she has a much lighter voice (something honestly I generally don't read but I do tend to like her) and a couple by Susan Kay Law although I was worried those would be harder to find.

Kristie had two books that are now in e to rec I haven't looked at yet. BUT I love love love Ride the Fire - it is FANTASTIC but some what graphic.

I need to read the Clare. I love her Morgan brothers historicals so far, so would love to see what she does with cowboys.

LOL - Ms. St. John (not be confused with our other "cheryl" commenter) your comment had me laughing out loud. Although when it comes to you, I sorta feel like we're preaching to the choir :)

Honestly, I'm not kidding about the long lost gold mine schtick. Over the years I would say I've read a handful of truly terrible westerns and they all featured Ye Olde Long Lost Gold Mine plot device. It's kinda peculiar actually......

It was so entertaining to read this interview. You 3 ladies have given me a lot of titles for my TBR list. I am a real fan of historical westerns, so it has been interesting to read your opinions and recommendations.

Kristie, I don't like too much "western speak" or "Scottish speak" either. I don't want historical dialog to sound like 2009, but I also don't want to stumble over dialog as I am reading. I need for the writing to flow in whatever I am reading.
