It's much like the rest of the book, the author seemed to find a novel workaround for way too many improbable things.

According to the excerpt, this is set in 1870. What alternate 1870 I cannot say, but it seems a tad unlikely to me that a girl whose father owned a bookshop would be attending a ball which a duke also attended. Not to mention the deeply questionable bit about them inheriting the bookshop. Is it as improbable as it seems or did the author find a novel workaround?
